MASTER PROGRAMS

MA in International Relations

THE PROGRAM

CUB's Master of Arts in International Relations is a two-year English-language program training future specialists of regional and international affairs with a comprehensive understanding of world politics and international relations. It is ideal preparation for those who wish to pursue a career in public administration, international institutions, NGOs or multinational companies based or operating within Central and Eastern Europe, but it does provide a more global outlook at the same time.

The program is hosted by CUB's Institute of International Studies where students have the opportunity to choose from a selection of area specialist as well as language courses to build up a useful portfolio. In addition, the program has a multidisciplinary scope with strong IR, international legal and world economics dimensions. A solid background in the social sciences and a variety of generalist courses, such as Theories of International Relations and Comparative Foreign Policy, are offered, as well as a focus on European Union affairs and Central and Eastern Europe's interaction with the wider context of world politics and the global economy. The emphasis is on training students empowered with the analytical (interpretive, critical thinking and problem-solving) skills that enable them to use knowledge for practical purposes.

The basic aim of the program is to train specialists with a wide horizon of social sciences to a high level, so that they will be able to understand the theoretical and practical correspondences in international relations. Students acquire high-level competence in foreign languages, negotiating techniques and in the rules of protocol. Their professional aptitude gained through a comprehensive training in history, international politics, international law and other fields of social sciences enables them to analyze and synthesize complex issues, understand and make predictions about the political, legal and economic processes of international relations. Upon completing these studies the students will be armed with all the theoretical and practical knowledge that a Master’s program can provide and as an additional bonus, they would be able to locate the perspectives of the Central East European (CEE) region amid the complexities of the international system as well as interpreting the EU’s role and position in world politics and the world economy. Likewise, the qualified students would have an understanding of the development tendencies in areas out of Europe. The program offers a choice for a future career in public administration, international institutions, NGOs or multinational companies.

The program is fully in English.

THE PROGRAM

The aim of this program is to train graduates with a thorough understanding of the processes of international economy, ranging from the fields of international business and economics to international politics and international law. This qualification should be attractive to students seeking analytical and business skills in an international context.

The core content of the program reflects the increasing globalization and continuous evolution of international economics and business management. Besides giving a sound methodological foundation in statistics and micro- and macroeconomic theory, the program addresses the main aspects of the global economy: among others, trade, finance, factoring and information flows, multinational corporations, corporate strategies, international organizations, development, regionalism and integration or intellectual property.

The objective of the program is to give students a firm theoretical background and teach them how to put theory into practice. To reap the full benefits of the program, active student participation in individual and group work is highly recommended.

The courses of the program are divided into five categories: catch-up courses, mandatory core courses, specialization courses, and elective courses.

As a preparation for the Master’s program, applicants are offered the option to take catch-up courses in the frame of a half-year preparatory program. The preparatory program includes reviews on basic fields essential to understand international economy and business, thus, for instance in microeconomics, macroeconomics or in statistics.

In the second year, students choose one of the following specializations:

  • International Development
  • International Economic Analysis

The Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology of Corvinus University of Budapest

We are always eager to understand persistent social problems including globalization and migration, entrepreneurs and business elites, power relations between men and women, the implications of flexible work-life initiatives and childbearing, the social exclusion of ethnic minorities, drug and alcohol use by the youth. Understanding these issues requires a careful study of the social and economic institutions and the public policy context, as well as sound empirical research to provide convincing evidence.

This four-semester Master programme focuses on the deep understanding of contemporary concepts, theories, analytical sociological models, and is designed to teach the students the importance of critical analysis of social processes and problems. The programme includes a specialization on economic and organizational sociology in order to examine the challenges arising from our social and economic environments.

Our programme is research-oriented. Students will acquire profound knowledge of up-to-date research methods including computer-assisted analysis of qualitative sources, methods of analysing large-scale survey and social network data and methods of impact assessment. In the final semester our students enter into an internship which will broaden their working experiences and improves their final thesis research topic.

Throughout their studies our students learn in an international student environment, and they have the chance to study in another European university within the Erasmus Mundus framework and other exchange programmes.

Depending on the progress in their own research project, students can take part in Student Scientific Research Competitions, publish in sociological journals, and continue the study in our PhD in Sociology programme.
