| Kivonat: | This paper compares the impacts of macro-structural changes in Finnish and Hungarian societies during 1989–2004 on the environmental management of a Finnish and Hungarian chemical company. (1) Regime change: Hungary experienced a fast change from a socialist economy to a market economy and Finland an equally a fast change from a welfare society to a market economy during the early 1990s. (2) EU membership: Finland received EU membership in 1995, Hungary in 2004. (3) Privatization: The Hungarian company followed the general trend that the 100% state-owned companies would become 100% private-owned. The Finnish company followed the general trend concerning the few remaining nearly 100% state-owned companies that they would gradually become increasingly private. The Finnish and Hungarian company represent two cases of survival and prosperity through major macro-structural changes. Reasons for this success included: (a) business environment: they operated in absolutely necessary lines of businesses for the environmentally slowly changing societies; (b) organization: they had efficient bureaucratic structures with capitalist mindsets; (c) management: they fostered managerial innovation, creativity, and risk-taking; (d) environmental pioneering: they adopted entrepreneurial approaches to environmental issues, transforming environmental threats to business opportunities. However, in the early 2000s the companies took different backward steps in (d) environmental pioneering. | ||||
