Ecological Economics Research Center

About the Center

The Centre for Ecological Economics, operating within the Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies (CIAS), is dedicated to advancing ecological economics as a transdisciplinary research field that challenges and moves beyond the confines of mainstream economic thought. Its mission is to foster research that supports the transition toward environmentally sustainable and socially equitable economic systems. The Centre’s vision is to become a leading academic platform for critical inquiry into the interdependence of economic, social, and ecological systems. Its primary goals include promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, conducting both theoretical and practice-oriented research, and contributing to public and policy discourse on ecological transformation.

Functioning as an intellectual hub, the Centre brings together scholars from a wide range of disciplines within and beyond Corvinus University who are committed to exploring the multifaceted dimensions of ecological economics. Its research agenda covers topics such as economic transitions, participatory democracies, policy innovation, and post-growth futures, degrowth incorporating both participatory methods and foresight approaches. Rooted in the

understanding that the economy is embedded within society and the biosphere—forming complex, interrelated systems—the Centre also engages with advanced systems theory. This invites cross-disciplinary dialogue and opens space for theoretical innovation essential to rethinking development pathways in the context of pressing ecological and social challenges.
