Visa and medical insurance

Visa information

Students have to apply for their visa and residence permits individually.

The rules and regulations on entering Hungary vary depending on your citizenship and place of residence. Since the rules of entering Hungary may change anytime, we highly suggest that before travelling, always check the website of the Hungarian Consular Services closest to you in order to properly plan your entry to Hungary.

If you will be transiting through another country when travelling, we suggest that you also check the transit regulations in effect in the given country (you can do this by contacting the given country’s embassy/consulate in your home country).

Important: Visa processing may take approximately 4–8 weeks depending on your country and the season. Students requiring a visa are strongly advised to begin the application process and book an embassy appointment as soon as possible after receiving their admission documents.

Checklist:

  • Step 1: Check your visa category
  • Step 2: Prepare your documents
  • Step 3: Apply for Type D visa or residence permit
    • What is a Type D visa?
If you are a student whose citizens require a visa to enter Hungary (Category 3 below), you will need to obtain a Type D visa before travelling. A Type D visa is a temporary entry document used to travel to Hungary. This is what will allow you to enter the country legally.

However, depending on your citizenship, some foreign citizens do not need a type D visa to enter Hungary. See if you are exempt from the visa requirement here: https://konzinfo.mfa.gov.hu/en/visa-free-travel-hungary.
    • What is a residence permit?
    • A residence permit is a long-term plastic ID card that legally authorizes you to live in Hungary for an authorized period of time, and travel within the Schengen Area.
  • Step 4: Travel to Budapest
  • Step 5: Register after arrival at Enter Hungary

Which option applies to you?

Before travelling to Hungary

  • EU & EEA* citizens do not need a visa. Citizens of the states of the European Economic Area (EEA) are entitled to enter the territory of Hungary in possession of a valid identity card or passport and might stay, not exceeding 90 days, without any special authorization.

After arrival

  • After arrival and enrolment, students (EEA citizens) planning to stay for more than 90 days in Hungary must apply for the issuance of a registration certificate and for the registration of residence. You need to submit your request with the required documents online on the Enter Hungary website:
  • Before submitting your application for a registration certificate, please read carefully the relevant pages on the official site of the Immigration Office.

*EEA citizen: a citizen of a Member State of the European Union other than a Hungarian citizen and a state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area (citizens of the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein).

Before travelling to Hungary

  • Check whether your country appears on the official visa waiverlist for ordinary passport (OP) holders. If you are a citizen of one of these visa-free countries, you can travel to and enter Hungary without a visa.

After arrival

  • Once you arrive in Hungary you will need to apply for a residence permit for study purposes within 30 days of your arrival. This will allow you to stay in Hungary legally during your studies. If you wish to stay for a period longer than 90 days, you must apply for a residence permit for the purpose of studies online, on the Enter Hungary website. See information about the process here.

Before travelling to Hungary

  • Non-EU/EEA nationals that require a visa to enter the Schengen Area and if their stay in Hungary exceeds 90 days must apply for a residence visa (Type D visa) in person at a Hungarian Embassy or the Hungarian Consulate General before entering Hungary.
  • Applications are submitted through the nearest Hungarian Embassy or Consulate. In most cases, students will also need to attend an interview.

Find the closest Hungarian Embassy or Consulate to you: https://konzinfo.mfa.gov.hu/en/embassies#hungarian-embassies-abroad

  • The list of required documents can be found here (Question 5). For your application the University will issue the following documents:
    • Self-funded international students paying their own tuition fees – a ‘Decision on Admission’ document confirming your programme details and the advance payment of your tuition fees
    • Self-funded international students with a Corvinus Scholarship – a ‘Decision on Admission’ document confirming your programme details and the award of a Corvinus scholarship covering your tuition fees
    • Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship students – A ‘Letter of Acceptance’, or ‘Decision’ document, confirming your programme details. In addition, you will also receive a ‘Letter of Award’ from the Tempus Foundation, confirming the award of your scholarship
  • If the visa is approved, you will receive a single-entry type D visa for a stay of 30 days. Upon arrival in Hungary, you will be able to collect your residence permit.

Important note: Do not start any resident permit application online, because you have already initiated the process at the Embassy/Consulate when applying for the D type visa!

After arrival

  • If you travelled to Hungary with a Type D-visa and already applied for the residence permit at the Hungarian Embassy/Consulate in your home country, you only need to receive your residence permit. The residence permit will arrive at your study institution (in this case at Corvinus), and you will be informed when and where to pick it up.

Medical insurance

Access to health care services for international students in Hungary varies depending on their country of origin and the type of scholarship they participate in. The following information outlines the entitlements for different groups and presents the university’s recommended private health insurance option.

Citizens of the EU/EEA and Swiss citizens, as well as persons insured in these states, shall be provided with medically necessary healthcare services during their temporary stay in Hungary on the basis of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC or EU Card). The EHIC is issued by your national health insurance provider. Please report your change of residence at your local provider. See more information here.

If you would like additional coverage, please arrange it individually.

  • Stipendium Hungaricum and Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship holders:
Students studying in Hungary under the Stipendium Hungaricum or the Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship are entitled to a range of health services as part of their scholarship. The scholarship includes public health care services (TAJ card) and supplementary private medical insurance.Further information on how to apply for these health services will be sent to you by the Stipendium and Diaspora office.
  • Self-funded students:
Students must ensure that they have adequate health insurance coverage for the duration of their studies in Hungary. Proof of valid insurance may also be required when applying for a residence permit. Therefore, each student must contract the insurance individually and bear the associated costs.

Recommended health insurance plan

Self-funded international students not automatically entitled to health services in Hungary should consider this option. Having health insurance in place might also be required for visa application purposes. The university therefore recommends taking out a private health insurance policy. The university has an established framework agreement with a trusted health insurance provider, Generali.
