Centre for Empirical Social Research

RESEARCH FOCUS

Our research group coordinates theoretically based empirical sociological research at the Corvinus University of Budapest in the topics of economic actors, entrepreneurs, elites, European integration, the information society and migration. We apply methods of design and analysis of questionnaires and representative data collections, content analysis, experiments, interviews, focus group in depth interviews, Delphi studies, deliberative public opinion polls, and citizens’ deliberations. RG staff have experience in discourse analysis and also in Q-methodology.

Mediatized EU – project

In this seven-country research, we examine how traditional and new media frame the European integration process and how this is reflected in public opinion. We follow the question from the beginning of the 21st century to the present day. The focus is on the arguments for and against the EU, how it appears in the media discourse, and in the elite-media-public opinion triangle. The project is carried out at the Empirical Social Research Center under the professional guidance of György Lengyel.

The main methods of the research are content and discourse analysis, population survey, elite interviews and civil meetings. Among the expected results is the image of what is the European Union like in the elites’ perspectives (including the media and public opinion) and what are its characteristics in international comparison and what are the likely social explanations for them. The research results may be suitable for formulating policy recommendations.
