Kick-off event in Wrocław, Poland, December 11-13, 2024
The kick-off meeting of SECPOLYC will take place in Wrocław, Poland from 11th to 13th December 2024. Wroclaw is one of the most important urban centres of Poland outside Warsaw.
This event aims to define the project’s goals and design and organise its implementation framework and to receive the first impetus from the experiences of development.
The program is structured around three key components:
1. Meeting of Researchers and Experts
- Developing a shared understanding of the project’s scope and objectives
- Presenting the urban systems’ general characteristics across participating countries
- Crafting the research design, including a detailed agenda and potential databases
- Identifying relevant datasets for analysis
2. Engagement with Local Authorities and Stakeholders
- Consulting with representatives from the Wrocław municipality, regional authorities, and other key stakeholders
- Conducting a site visit to explore city strategies, development challenges, and opportunities
- Gathering stakeholder expectations and input to align with project goals
3. Interactive Session with Wrocław University Students
- Engaging students enrolled in related academic programs to share insights and foster collaboration
This meeting serves as a critical milestone in laying the foundation for the SECPOLYC project’s success, combining expert insights with local perspectives and academic engagement.

The second interdisciplinary scientific seminar focused on identifying, understanding and expressing the specificities and possibilities of polycentric development in the V4 countries by revealing the regional development role of secondary cities.

Introductory lectures (2 to 3:30 p.m.)

- Ladislav Novotný (Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice): Polycentricity of the Urban System in Slovakia: Insights from Differential Urbanization
- Robert Szmytkie (University of Wroclaw): Some dimensions of polycentricity of the urban system in Poland
- Stanislav Kraft (University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice): 30 years of polycentric development in Brno metropolitan area
Coffee break (3:30 to 4 p.m.)
General discussion focused on processes, structures and spatial patterns of polycentric development (4 to 6 p.m.)
