Urban and Environmental Policy Studies

Doctoral Programme

Following the restructuring of the former Geopolitics and Sustainable Development program, our program now focuses on the study of urban, environmental, and territorial development topics, with contributions from various institutes of the university . The program deals with the dynamics of our spatial (e.g., urban) systems and our environment and the possibilities for shaping them through various public sector mechanisms (planning, development, and other policy mechanisms). The spatial organisation of society and the economy, as well as the conscious coordination and planning of the relationship between humans and the environment by the public sphere, receive special attention in the context of sustainable development.

The program is primarily intended for applicants conducting research in the fields of urban transformations, urban planning, regional development, local development, political and economic geography, environmental economics, and environmental policy.

Why the Urban and Environmental Policy Studies Doctoral Program?

The research opportunities of the doctoral program cover a broad area, in line with the diverse profile of the Department of Geography, Geoeconomy and Sustainable Development, which are as follows:

  • economic geography,
  • geopolitics,
  • development policy,
  • urban planning,
  • environmental economics,
  • environmental policy,
  • green finances,
  • the relationship between sustainability and any of the above topics.

Due to its international nature, the Program is open to applicants to examine issues arising at global, regional and other levels, in a geographical sense as well. We place special emphasis on issues affecting the Carpathian Basin.
