Welcome to Corvinus University of Budapest! On this page you can find the most important procedures, regulations, and documents to guide you during your study period at Corvinus.

Visa

The rules and regulations on entering Hungary vary depending on your citizenship and place of residence. Please check the relevant information prepared for you carefully to ensure that you will be able to enter Hungary without any difficulties.

If you will be transiting through another country when travelling, we suggest that you check the transit regulations in effect in the given country (you can do this by contacting the given country’s embassy/consulate in your home country). Since the rules of entering Hungary may change anytime, therefore we highly suggest that before travelling always check the website of Hungarian Consular Services closest to you in order to properly plan your entry to Hungary.

If the foreign citizen who does not need a type D visa to enter Hungary and wishes to stay for a period longer than 90 days, they must apply for a residence permit directly in Hungary at the regional office of the Directorate General for Foreigners and Borders (OIF). This means that it is not necessary to apply in person and in advance at the Hungarian Embassy or the Hungarian Consulate General for a residence visa (type D visa).

According to Hungarian law, visa exempt citizens can apply for a residence permit up to the 89th day of their stay in the Schengen Area at the regional office of the Directorate General for Foreigners and Borders (OIF), but it is recommended to do so in advance.

See if you are exempt from the visa requirement here: https://konzinfo.mfa.gov.hu/en/visa-free-travel-hungary

Citizens of countries that require a visa to enter the Schengen Area (see the reverse list here, i.e. the list of countries whose citizens do not require a visa) and if their stay in Hungary exceeds 90 days, must apply for a residence visa (type D visa) in person at a Hungarian Embassy or the Hungarian Consulate General. If the visa is approved, you will receive a single-entry type D visa for a stay of 30 days.

Upon arrival in Hungary, you will be able to collect your residence permit. Within the validity of this permit, holders may make short-term trips (less than 90 days) to the entire territory of the Schengen Area without needing another authorization or visa.

Find the closest Hungarian Embassy or Consulate to you: https://konzinfo.mfa.gov.hu/en/embassies#hungarian-embassies-abroad

Third-country nationals, who submitted their application at a Hungarian Embassy/Consulate abroad and hold a type D visa, must do the following.

  1. Apply at the Embassy/Consulate
  2. Travel to Hungary with the type D visa

Please do not start any resident permit application online, because you have already initiated the process at the Embassy/Consulate when applying for the D type visa!
  3. You can claim the issued residence permit only at your EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION. The Immigration Office cannot give you the residence permit at their client service, please do not appear there for this cause.
  4. Your e- certificate of accommodation will be sent electronically.
  5. If your accommodation has changed since you applied for the visa/residence permit, you must report the change in EnterHungary

Residence Permit

Foreign citizens who wish to stay in Hungary for a period of more than 90 days must apply for a Hungarian residence permit. You must have a valid residence permit allowing you to study in Hungary during the whole period of your studies. When your residence permit expires or it gets invalidated, e.g. because of passive status (and you haven’t applied for an extension), you need to leave Hungary.

Citizens of the states of the European Economic Area (EEA) are entitled to enter the territory of Hungary in possession of a valid identity card or passport and might stay, not exceeding 90 days, without any special authorization.

EEA citizens planning to stay for more than 90 days in Hungary must apply for the issuance of a registration certificate and for the registration of residence. You need to submit your request with the required documents online on the Enter Hungary website: https://enterhungary.gov.hu/eh/

It is important that you clearly understand how you can arrange the registration certificate. Before submitting your application for a registration certificate, please read carefully the relevant pages on the official site of the Immigration Office.

*EEA citizen: a citizen of a Member State of the European Union other than a Hungarian citizen and a state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area (citizens of the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein).

Before you finish your studies at CUB in Hungary and move back to your country, it is advisable to cancel your registration certificate and your address card as well.

You need to obtain a residence permit for the purpose of study if you are a student from the non-European Economic Area (non-EEA) and you wish:

  • to study in a registered Hungarian secondary or higher educational institution or
  • to participate in a preparatory course for higher education organized by a higher educational institution, and it certifies that you have the knowledge of language necessary for your studies.
  1. If you traveled to Hungary visa-free, you need to apply for a residence permit for the purpose of studies online, on the Enter Hungary See information about the process here.
  2. If you traveled to Hungary with a D-visa and already applied for the residence permit at the Hungarian embassy/consulate in your home country, you only need to receive your residence permit.

All residence permits for the purpose of study are sent to the address of the university by post. You can receive your residence permit at CUB. Please wait for a notification from Neptun with further information about where and when to receive your card.

Address Card

If you are a non-EEA student and you plan to stay in Hungary longer than 30 days, you are required to register your accommodation and any consequent changes online on the Enter Hungary website within 3 days of taking up residence.

The QR code received upon accommodation registration has the function of an address card.  It has to be available at all times and be presented to the authorities if requested.

  1. If you applied for a D-visa + residence permit at a Hungarian consulate/embassy, you do not need to register your accommodation again online, only if it has changed since then. You will receive your QR code “address card” in pdf format in e-mail or in your Enter Hungary inbox.
  2. If you apply for a residence permit for the first time in Hungary (because you come from a visa free country), you need to register your address online.

Documents:

  • “Notification of Accomodation”
Please download it, print it, fill it out, and ask your dormitory /landlord/ agent to sign it, then upload it to your case on the Enter Hungary website. Important: it has to be signed by hand, with a blue pen!
  • Certificate of accommodation
    • Dormitory certificate (stamped and signed by the management); or
    • Proof of student hostel (stamped and signed by the management); or

IMPORTANT!

If you applied for the visa at a Hungarian consulate/embassy and your address has changed after you arrived in Hungary (e.g. you applied for the visa with a dorm address, but you live in a rented flat), you need to register the change of your address.

If you received a QR-code (address card) with the wrong address/not your current address/address of the university, you need to register the change of your address.

European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Citizens of the Member States of the European Economic Area and Swiss citizens, as well as persons insured in these states, shall be provided with medically necessary healthcare services during their temporary stay in Hungary on the basis of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC or EU Card).

Students need to arrange health insurance individually. In the case of EU citizens, the EU health insurance card is sufficient. However, since it only covers emergencies, applying for additional health insurance is recommended.

What is the EU card?

  • It is a free card that gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland or the United Kingdom under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as for people insured in that country.
  • EHIC is issued by your national health insurance provider.
  • See more information here.

*Citizens and insured persons of the following Member States can receive medically necessary care with a European Health Insurance Card: Austria, Bulgaria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, United Kingdom, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Croatia, Netherlands, Ireland, Iceland, Poland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Germany, Norway, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia.

TAJ Card

Hungary has a public healthcare system that makes it possible to access healthcare services without paying for the individual treatments. This is very useful in case of an accident or sudden illness, because without this system, the cost of getting treated would be very high. In order to have access to the public healthcare system, you need a TAJ card that has your social security number on it. This is the card that you have to show in order to get treated without any fees if you go to the doctor or hospital.

Please note that this is a paid service, which monthly fees may vary depending on your country of origin. Hence, it is not obligatory to have this, and it is up to you whether you would like to apply for it or not. It is recommended to have health insurance during the whole period of your studies; whether that being the Hungarian public healthcare system or any other private insurance, the decision is up to you.

According to regulation, a resident who is not insured and is not entitled to health service under any legal title is obliged to pay health service contributions (a domestic private individual who has neither an insured nor a beneficiary relationship).

From a social security perspective, a person with the right of free movement and residence who has a registered place of residence are also considered to be resident persons. Therefore, EEA citizens may apply for the TAJ card under these conditions:

  • the person liable to pay contributions must have had a registered place of residence in the territory of Hungary for at least one year without interruption, prior to the occurrence of the obligation to pay contributions or the registration for payment of contributions.
  • The amount of the healthcare service contribution is 11,800 HUF (390 HUF/day) from January 1, 2025, which must be paid monthly from the date of registration until the 12th of the month following the month in question.

What documents are required to apply for or replace a TAJ card?

  • EEA citizen [if he/she exercises the right of free movement and residence for more than three months in the territory of Hungary and has a registered address here]:
    • Hungarian registration card or residence permit,
    • identity card/passport and
    • address card,
  • in the case of a person insured in an EEA member state, Switzerland or a state covered by an international agreement before applying for social security, a form or official certificate issued by the insurer of the member state of the place of insurance immediately preceding the application for social security,
  • TAJ application form – filled out and signed with a blue pen

You may apply directly at the Government Office (NEAK) at the following address: 1139 Budapest, Teve Street, 1/a-c.

Those who are not entitled to use the health insurance services on some legal grounds have the opportunity to conclude an official contract or agreement with the health insurance body in order to ensure this. Based on the agreement, a monthly contribution in the amount specified by law must be paid.

Please note that, in this case, the entitlement based on the agreement provides a narrower scope of benefits than the in-kind health insurance benefits due on the basis of other legal relationships.

Therefore, non-EEA citizens may apply for the TAJ card under these conditions:

  • The agreement enters into force on the first day of the month following its conclusion, but only from the first day of the 24th month following the conclusion of the contract, it entitles the holder to use a full range of healthcare services, with 3 exceptions.
  • From the first month to the 24th month following the conclusion of the agreement, the agreement entitles the holder to use only emergency care.
  • In the case of a foreign citizen pursuing full-time studies at an educational institution in Hungary, a monthly contribution of 87,240 HUF must be paid, equivalent to 30% of the minimum wage valid on the day of the contract conclusion – based on the minimum wage of 290,800 HUF in 2025.

What documents are required to apply for or replace a TAJ card?

To conclude the agreement, the following documents must be presented and data must be verified:

  • proof of identity: valid passport,
  • document proving the beneficiary’s residence or accommodation: address card,
  • in the case of a foreign citizen, a document authorizing residence issued by the immigration authority (excluding residence permits for medical treatment and local border traffic permits): residence permit for purpose of studies
  • in the case of a full-time student, a certificate of school attendance: active student status certificate (can be downloaded from Neptun)
  • health assessment questionnaire completed and signed
  • TAJ application form – filled out and signed with a blue pen
  • proof of payment of twenty-four months of contributions in the case of entitlement based on an agreement. Please note that the issuance of a TAJ card can only be requested after paying 24 months of contributions.

You may apply directly at the Government Office (NEAK) at the following address: 1139 Budapest, Teve Street, 1/a-c.

Accommodation

Students may apply for a dormitory place in one of the Corvinus dormitories. Precise information on the application process is available here.  As the number of places in the university dormitories is rather limited, many Corvinus students will have to arrange for accommodation on their own.

To assist international students, the management of the Corvinus dormitories has searched for possible alternative accommodations that offer similar services at varying, but not inaccessible prices. This information is also available here

We recommend that you do not arrange for a long-term private accommodation before your arrival to Hungary. As many students have already experienced – internet advertising can be misleading. Make sure to check out the accommodation and the neighborhood before committing yourself. There are many options available in Budapest for short-term accommodation for your arrival.

Student ID

International students are provided with a student ID card with which they can have the same advantages as Hungarian students. Those who have valid student ID card are eligible for:

  • travel discounts
  • library discounts in the public libraries
  • museum discounts
  • service discounts

The Hungarian student ID card is also an international student card. There is a “European Youth Card” logo on the back of the card, which many foreign countries can use to offer discounted services. You can get more information on the website of the international organization: www.eyca.org

Please see here how to apply for a student ID.
