The Doctoral School of International Relations and Political Science at Corvinus Has Renewed Its Accreditation

In its resolution dated 10 July, MAB accredited the Doctoral School of International Relations and Political Science at Corvinus University of Budapest until 10 July 2030, with a monitoring procedure attached. The aim of MAB’s evaluation was to assess whether the doctoral school plans and carries out its activities in line with the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG) for quality assurance in higher education, and whether the University’s quality assurance system forms an integrated whole with the processes of the doctoral school.
The reasoning states, among other things, that the institutional quality assurance system covers most of the doctoral school’s processes; the management of teaching and research is appropriate; and the direction of teaching and research aligns with the school’s strategy. Supporting functions – such as finance, governance, IT, facilities management, and infrastructure – provide a solid background for educational and research activities.
Exemplary practices
The MAB report identifies several practices at the Corvinus Doctoral School of International Relations and Political Science that could serve as examples for other doctoral schools. One such practice is the use of the Moodle platform, where students’ progress and work are planned in advance and supervised by their supervisors – an efficient, transparent and environmentally friendly solution, according to the committee. The report also highlights the Research Forums as a strength, which help track students’ progress collectively, as well as the “Meet the Dean” and “PhD Café” series, which encourage informal academic discussion.
The school’s bilingual website is also praised for meeting 21st-century standards, offering not only static information but also personal video content. Another initiative that received positive mention is the mentoring programme, where senior PhD students support first-year candidates with both academic and social integration. The committee found this initiative well thought out and responsive to students’ needs, with a clear concept and assessment criteria.
The report also outlines a few recommended actions. As part of the monitoring procedure, the doctoral school is required to submit a written update on these measures to MAB by 30 June 2027.
