László Kiss, a former member of the Constitutional Court and honorary doctor of Corvinus, has passed away

László Kiss, a former member of the Constitutional Court, has passed away at the age of 76. In 2007, he was awarded the title of doctor honoris causa by the Faculty of Public Administration of Corvinus University of Budapest.

His research focused on legislation, the constitutional position of local governments, and legislative issues affecting municipalities. He served as a member of the Constitutional Court from 1998 to 2016; his mandate as a constitutional judge ended on 10 March 2016. Dr László Kiss, constitutional judge, is regarded by the Constitutional Court as one of its own deceased members. 

He obtained his law degree in 1975 from the Faculty of Law of the University of Pécs, then he taught at the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law of the faculty for decades. He earned his Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences degree in state and legal sciences in 1992. He was a Humboldt fellow at the Philipps-University Marburg in 1988 and again in 1997. 

At the Faculty of Law of Janus Pannonius University, he taught constitutional law, administrative law and legislation. In 2007, he was elected doctor honoris causa of the Faculty of Public Administration of Corvinus University of Budapest. 

Professor Kiss was a distinctive personality as a person, colleague and teacher. The social purpose of constitutional and administrative law, and of bringing these fields closer to society, were causes close to his heart. He believed that the ultimate aim of law is to improve people’s lives and the functioning of society, and to contribute to a better world. 

He was the author or co-author of more than 35 books and monographs, and published nearly 200 scholarly articles in Hungarian and international journals. From 2012 he served on the editorial board of the electronic professional journal Kodifikáció. His hometown, Jánosháza, awarded him honorary citizenship in 2016. In 2024 he received the Tüke Prize, one of the most prestigious civic honours of the city of Pécs. 

His memory will be preserved.
