János Száz awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit

The professor emeritus of the Institute of Finance at Corvinus received the prestigious honor for his research and teaching work, among other things, in the fields of financial markets and corporate finance.

On the occasion of the national holiday commemorating the 1848/49 Revolution and War of Independence, President Tamás Sulyok once again presented high-ranking state honors this year. 

János Száz, economist and professor emeritus at Corvinus University of Budapest, has been awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit. He received the prestigious distinction in recognition of his dedicated and exemplary professional career, particularly for his research and teaching in the fields of financial markets and corporate finance, as well as for his influential public professional activity. 

The award was presented by Csaba Lantos, Minister of Energy. 

János Száz graduated in 1976 from the predecessor of Corvinus University, the Karl Marx University of Economics, where he has been teaching ever since. He primarily teaches mathematically oriented subjects, including the pricing of options and other derivative products, as well as their use in risk management. Between 1995 and 1998, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Economics, and from 2004 to 2009 he was Head of the Department of Investments.  

From 1989 to 1991, as Professional Director of the International Training Center for Bankers and as President of the Central European Brokerage Training Foundation, he laid the foundations for capital market professional training. 

Between 1990 and 1991, and again from 1995 to 1998, he served as an advisor to the Governor of the Hungarian National Bank (MNB), and from 1998 to 2001 he was a member of the Monetary Council. For many years, he also served as President of the Financial Section of the Hungarian Economic Association. 

Between 1988 and 1993, he was a member of the Exchange Council of the Budapest Stock Exchange (BÉT) and the Securities Trading Agreement. In 1995, he served a one-year term as Chairman of the Budapest Stock Exchange. 

Between 1990 and 1993, he was a member of the council of the newly re-established Budapest Stock Exchange (BÉT), where he was responsible for organizing education and the stock exchange professional examinations. From 1995 to 1996, he served as Chairman of the BÉT; during his tenure, electronic trading was introduced and the integrated trading system for government securities, equities, and derivatives (MMTS) was developed. 

He delivered popular lectures on investment topics on television as part of the “University of All Knowledge” (2005) and the “Academy for Everyone” (2017) programs; he is the author of numerous textbooks and professional publications. His professional work has previously been recognized with several awards, including the Apáczai Csere János Award (2002) and the Popovics Award (1997). 

This is his 100th semester teaching at Corvinus University of Budapest.
