Getting Around Budapest: A Quick Guide for our Newcomers

Just arrived in Budapest? The city might feel a bit overwhelming at first, but don’t worry – it’s actually easy to get around once you know the basics. Here’s a quick guide to help you settle in.

Public transport is your friend
Budapest has one of the most efficient public transport systems in Europe. You can use the same ticket across metros, buses, trams and trolleybuses. Buy tickets from vending machines or, better yet, use the BudapestGo app which you can download here.

This application lets you buy and store tickets, plan your route, and check real-time arrival info.

Get a pass
For day-to-day travel, passes are more convenient and cheaper than single tickets. There are three main types:

Students get discounted rates with a valid student ID.

From the airport
The 100E bus takes you directly to the city centre (Kálvin tér, Astoria, Deák Ferenc tér). It costs 2,200 HUF and requires a special ticket, which you can buy at machines, through the app, or with a card on board.

Don’t forget to validate
Always validate your ticket or pass. If you’re using the app, scan the QR code on the vehicle. For paper tickets, use the yellow or grey machines.

Want to see the city from the water? Try the BKK boats
Budapest’s public transport boats operate along the Danube and offer a scenic way to get around. You can use the same ticket as for buses or trams, making it a fun and affordable way to explore the city – especially when the weather is nice.

Late-night travel and other options
Night buses and trams run throughout the city, just less frequently. You can also use MOL Bubi, the city’s public bike-sharing service. Find out more and download the app here.

Prefer taxis? Stick to trusted services like Bolt or Főtaxi or Uber. Avoid unlicensed cars and never hail one from the street.

Best advice? Walk
Budapest is made for walking. It’s full of character, history, and stunning architecture – so take your time and explore on foot.
