European University Chess Championship – Yerevan

Barnabás Kovácsy:
We have just finished a great competition, which included surprises, excitement, and many unforgettable moments. Gellért and I had the honor of representing Corvinus’s first team. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to win a medal, but we came in 4th and 6th in the two competitions, which is pretty good considering the high level of competition. Unfortunately, I was feeling a bit under the weather during the competition, which affected my performance a little, but I think I still did well and played most of my games pretty well. In addition to the chess tournament, we were fortunate to have time to see the sights of Yerevan and get to know a country a little better that I never thought I would visit. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our trip and hope to have the opportunity to compete in similar tournaments in the future. I gained a lot of experience and believe that if we are given the opportunity again next year, we will repay the trust placed in us with medals.
Tamás Günes:
We spent eight unforgettable days in Yerevan, where we represented Corvinus University’s second team at the European University Chess Championship. My teammate, Kornél Fodor, and I competed in the Rapid competition, where we finished in 6th place, and in Blitz, where we finished in 18th place. The field was very strong, so every game was a real challenge for us. For me, the competition went extremely well, with only 2 losses out of 18 games. Unfortunately, in the last round of Blitz, we had some bad luck with the pairings, as we had to compete against our friends from the first team, but despite this, we had a great competition from a sporting point of view. In addition to the competition, we had the opportunity to experience the vibrant atmosphere of Yerevan, discover Armenian culture, and make many new friends among the members of teams from different countries. It was a special experience for us to be able to enrich ourselves with so many cultural and social experiences in addition to sports. We are proud to have represented Corvinus University at such a prestigious international event, and we hope that our results have contributed to spreading the good reputation of our university on the international stage.
Kornél Fodor:
This year, we entered the 2025 European Championship in Yerevan with a particularly strong field. Tamás Öngüt and I represented Corvinus’s second team. The competition was a bit up and down for us. We did better in rapid chess, but not so well in blitz. After a decent start in the rapid competition, we had a bad run in the middle of the competition, but in the end we managed to finish in 6th place with a good finish. We didn’t manage to pull off such a feat in the blitz competition and ended up in 18th place. Compared to our pre-competition expectations, this is to be expected, but I feel we could have done much better. Unfortunately, that’s how it turned out in the blitz, but we are very proud of our 6th place finish in the rapid at this European Championship. In addition to the competition, we also had the opportunity to discover the special places of Yerevan and experience the atmosphere of a country with a truly rich culture. Overall, we are extremely grateful to the university for this opportunity, and we can safely say that we have gained an experience that will last a lifetime. We took home a wealth of valuable experiences, results, and unforgettable memories.
Gellért Karácsonyi :
The past week has brought a lot of new things, both individually and as a team. We achieved a good result in the rapid tournament, fourth place in this field is very encouraging, and I was also satisfied with my own game. We won an important match, but unfortunately lost another, so we missed out on the podium. Unfortunately, the blitz part was a little weaker, but we can’t complain about sixth place. Personally, I’m more disappointed that I ruined several games that I could have won. Yerevan is a wonderful place, I really liked it, and we got along well with each other. In addition to Corvinus, the Hungarian delegation was complemented by the University of Physical Education. All in all, we came away with many fond memories, both on and off the chessboard. We would like to thank the university for making this serious competition possible, and we are ready to bring home as many prizes and placings as possible from MEFOB and EUSA events in the future!
