Corvinus-CUHK initiative to play a prominent role in Shenzhen’s new innovation hub

A joint initiative by Corvinus University of Budapest and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is set to take on a prominent role in a major new innovation hub that officially opened on 10 March in Shenzhen’s Qianhai district.

A Hungarian delegation attended the opening ceremony of the InnoHub for New Quality Industries, underscoring the importance of the partnership between Corvinus and CUHK. The strategically significant development aims to create an open innovation ecosystem that brings together universities, businesses and investors, while helping new technologies reach industrial application more quickly.

The new complex includes 14 buildings and offers around 143,000 square metres of usable space. In addition to serving as a major centre for research and technology transfer, it is also intended to function as an international platform for talent exchange, start-up support and technological cooperation, with particular emphasis on partnerships with Belt and Road countries.

CUHK is among the institutions based at the new hub, and its joint platform with Corvinus, the Academic and Innovation Matrix (AIM), has been given special emphasis within the InnoHub by decision of the CUHK leadership. This means the Hungarian-Chinese initiative will have a distinguished role in the centre’s future activities.

The opening ceremony brought together more than 200 participants from government, academia and industry across mainland China and Hong Kong. Speakers highlighted the new hub’s potential to accelerate the path to market for research in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, life sciences and healthcare.

The Hungarian delegation included Péter Baranyi, founder of AIM and Head of the Cognitive Infocommunications Research Centre at Corvinus CIAS; Zoltán Oszkár Szántó, Head of the International Research Centre at Corvinus CIAS; Tamás Bartus, Vice-Rector for Research at Corvinus; Nikolett Deutsch, Head of the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation; Éva Pintér, Associate Professor in the Department of Innovation and Business Incubation; and János Csák, Honorary Professor at Corvinus University of Budapest, adviser to the university’s CIAS research institute, and former Hungarian Minister for Culture and Innovation.

The research cooperation agreement on the Academic and Innovation Matrix (AIM) was signed by Corvinus and CUHK in spring 2024. The partnership is designed to strengthen research collaboration and student and researcher exchange between the two institutions in the fields of science, technology and innovation, contributing to scientific and technological progress in both Hungary and China.
