Competitiveness or Falling Behind – SMEs at the Digital Turning Point

Digitalisation is no longer merely an opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs); it is increasingly becoming a key factor of competitiveness. This topic was at the centre of the latest Spin-off Club event supported by the Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BKIK), where expert entrepreneurs explored how Hungarian SMEs can effectively take advantage of the opportunities offered by digital solutions.
Participants were welcomed by dr. Viktória Bódi, Secretary General of BKIK. During the panel discussion, four experts shared their insights and practical experience: Ervin Balázs, founder of Smartitory; Bátor Turny, AI consultant representing Makeden and Corvinus alumnus; Tóni Hirdi, Managing Director of Pattern Digital Consulting; and Simon Kulcsár, an organisational development consultant at OD Partner. Throughout the discussion, the panellists offered different perspectives on how digital tools and technological solutions can help businesses improve operational efficiency.
The conversation also covered the latest technological trends, the business applications of automation and artificial intelligence, and emphasised that digital transformation is not only a technological issue but also requires organisational and mindset changes. The experts highlighted that one of the keys to successful digital transformation is conscious strategic planning, as well as the ability of companies to introduce new solutions step by step, based on realistic goals.
Participants also shared numerous practical examples and experiences with the university audience, which may help businesses avoid the most common pitfalls of digitalisation. The aim of the event was to provide inspiration and tangible guidance for young entrepreneurs and university students aspiring to start businesses on how to prepare for the challenges of a rapidly changing business environment.
The event once again confirmed that digitalisation is not a one-time project but an ongoing process of development in which the right knowledge, strategy, and openness play a crucial role.
The event was realised within the framework of the BKIK University Partnership Program organised by Youth Enterprise Support Society (YESS). One of BKIK’s key objectives is to strengthen cooperation between businesses and knowledge centres. A major pillar of this effort is the BKIK University Partnership Program, which connects higher education institutions with the entrepreneurial sector. Through the program, students gain access to real market experience, while businesses can directly engage with the latest scientific and technological developments.
