Abstract:
Lifetime pension pools—also known as tontines, pooled annuity funds, or variable payout life annuities—offer retirees variable lifelong income by sharing risks among pool members rather than transferring them to an insurer. This talk presents findings from a research program addressing the design of lifetime pension pools that retirees would want to join and that institutions could realistically run. The connecting thread is a focus on the level and stability of the income retirees receive. Topics explored include the foundational mechanics of benefit adjustments in a lifetime pension pool, how pricing and investment policies shape the trade-off between the level and stability of benefits, and how differences in pool members’ age and/or wealth affect the stability of retirement income.
