“Our goal is for CEMS graduates to stand out in an international field from day one” – interview with Zita Kelemen

She was among the first students to complete the CEMS programme in Hungary and, thanks to it, she launched her career in an international environment. Today, she contributes as a lecturer to the CEMS programme—available exclusively at Corvinus in Hungary—and, like the other instructors, she aims to equip students with knowledge that helps them stand out from their competitors. We spoke with Zita Kelemen, Head of International Mobility at Corvinus, about the CEMS programme.
Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem

You were once a CEMS student yourself, and now you teach in the programme.
One of the lifelong advantages of CEMS is its international networkonce someone becomes part of CEMS, they belong to a global community for life. Looking back at your career, what do you personally owe to the programme?

I owe a great deal to CEMS—it essentially opened the world for me. Without it, I probably would never have landed my first consulting job in Milan, nor the marketing position I later took at L’Oréal’s Hungarian office. For partner companies, a CEMS degree served—and still servesas a guarantee of talented new recruits, so many multinational firms actively searched for graduates from the programme.

My situation was also special in the sense that the university signed the CEMS agreement during my studies, so at the beginning we had very little information about this opportunity. In the years following the political transition, scholarship opportunities in Western Europe were only slowly becoming accessible. I managed to study at a Swedish university, where they pointed out that, with the courses I had completed abroad and the foreign-language courses I had already taken at home, I could actually complete the CEMS programme. That’s how I became one of the first students in Hungary to earn a CEMS degree and one of the first to experience the lifelong advantages the programme can offer. That’s why I’m glad that, now as a lecturer, I can contribute to the success of today’s CEMS students.

What do you consider the biggest advantage CEMS gave you?

This diploma opened doors that I most likely couldn’t have entered otherwise. For instance, I applied for an internship at L’Oréal’s headquarters in Paris, and when they saw my CEMS diploma, they immediately forwarded my CV to the company’s Hungarian officewhere the CEO personally interviewed me. I also owe my first consulting position in Milan to CEMS, and later, upon returning to Hungary, the marketing role I received at L’Oréal.

As an instructor, what values do you prioritise, and what skills do you try to pass on to your students?

CEMS instructors have always aimed to provide knowledge and skills that help graduates stand out from the crowd. I teach marketing-related subjects, and within that, I emphasise financial literacy, because in my experience, only those with solid financial understanding can reach the highest levels in the marketing field.

This is a prestigious master’s programme, and as instructors, we are well aware of the expectations of partner companies. We work accordingly to provide very practice-oriented knowledge. Our goal is for CEMS graduates to stand out from their international competitors from the very first day.

Over the past decade, the CEMS programme has significantly contributed to the university’s increased international visibility. The new strategy places internationalisation at the forefront. What role do you see for CEMS in this process, and how do you think this might reshape the programme’s perception and importance within the university?

In Western Europe, CEMS has been a well-known, well-functioning programme and global network for decades. It guarantees students an internationally recognised degree and guarantees partner companies access to outstanding talent. In Hungary, the programme operates exclusively at our university, and this sends a strong message even to potential foreign partner institutions and companies that may not yet be familiar with the Corvinus name.

Beyond the career advantages, what added experiences or insights do you think the programme offers students?

We often say that once someone becomes a CEMS student, they remain part of the community forever—and this is due to the experiences, insights, and valuable personal connections a programme like this can offer. The semester spent at a partner university abroad or the international internship can both broaden horizons and have a lifelong impact on a CEMS student’s worldview and career.
