HVG rankings: Corvinus retains its leading position in Hungarian economics and social science education

According to Hungary’s leading higher education ranking system, the HVG 2026 ranking, Corvinus University of Budapest remains the country’s top institution in the disciplines it teaches, and ranks first in several sub-rankings as well.

In the field of economics education, Corvinus has held on to first place, shared with ELTE GTK. It also leads the subject-area ranking for social sciences, and placed 6th in information technology.

In the institutional ranking, Corvinus is top based on the average entry score of admitted students, with 459 points. It ranks 3rd for student excellence, and in the overall programme ranking it has maintained last year’s 9th place.

In the faculty-based ranking (Corvinus counts as a single faculty), it achieved 2nd place for student excellence. It also leads in the average entry score of admitted students, and has the highest number of applicants listing it as their first choice. Based on the number of students placed in secondary school competitions, it ranks 3rd, only three students behind the institution in first place.

This year’s ranking, covering 27 institutions, was compiled on the basis of student indicators (number of first-choice applicants, average entry score of admitted students, proportion of applicants indicating a language certificate, and students placed in secondary school competitions) and academic excellence indicators (number of students per academic staff member with a scientific degree, total number of students, number and proportion of staff with a scientific degree, and the proportion of staff holding an MTA title). The theoretical foundation of the ranking methodology, based on the Univpress approach, was developed by the ranking network of ELTE PPK’s Social Communication Research Group using data from the Education Office of the state.

The list does not include smaller universities, typically those offering primarily theological or arts programmes, nor institutions where the number of teaching staff does not reach 25 and student numbers are below 500.
