A team of three undergraduate students from Corvinus University secured first place at the MBC Case Competition in Vienna held in April, following a strong performance grounded in thorough preparation and strategic thinking.

Three Corvinus students brought home gold from Vienna, achieving first place at the Modul Business Championship between April 24 and 27, impressing juries with their thoughtful and well-executed solutions in both rounds of the competition. Their teamwork, strategic preparation, and storytelling set them apart at from the other competing teams.

The team consisted of Éva Eszter Gombos, Luca Németh, and Róbert Tóth — all bachelor students from Corvinus University, who were guided by their advisors Bence Gál, the former president of Corvinus Case Track Community, and Miklós Kozma PhD, Associate Professor, from the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The team members earned their spot in the team through their excellent performance in Case Track courses and a rigorous selection round.

The trio’s preparation was shaped by targeted workshops that emphasized strategic storytelling, business model innovation, and culturally nuanced communication. They practiced clear message delivery, sharpened their Q&A performance, and designed dynamic presentations. Workshops also covered understanding Austrian German communication styles, ensuring that solutions would resonate with the jury’s expectations. One juror even commented, “This is the one team we could imagine as paid consultants.”

As all three of us have attended many competitions before, our only job was fine-tuning, and getting used to each other. But if I had to highlight something, I would say that we have received tons of feedback throughout the years, and I think that this was the first time that we could implement these, incorporating all sorts of things that required of us. It is like we had all the pieces of the puzzle, and we finally managed to put all of them together. – Luca Németh

The preliminary round featured a tourism case set in a fictional town, while the final case challenged teams with a real-world task from Raiffeisen Bank: developing a youth-focused digital banking solution for 14–18-year-olds. The Corvinus team’s complex idea, Raiffeisen NEXT, combined financial tools with lifestyle features, retention mechanisms, and parental oversight. Judges praised its creativity, realism, and consulting-ready execution.

Though the team had only three members, as opposed to the usual four-member teams, their synergy was seamless. Responsibilities flowed naturally: Évi led on finance, Luca shaped strategy, and Robi brought sharp analysis. Their presentations featured fluid speaker transitions and even physical props, like a watch used to illustrate a metaphor in their opening story.

Our team dynamics, particularly during the competition, were almost flawless. Everyone contributed equally to the solution process, and everything we presented was the result of collective brainstorming and ideation. The distribution of roles naturally evolved from the start of our preparation and remained consistent throughout. Évi handled the finances and a bit of everything else, Luca was our main strategist, and I primarily took on the analyst role. – Róbert Tóth

Bence Gál and Professor Kozma were instrumental in the team’s development. The students expressed deep gratitude for their advisors’ support, insight, and belief throughout the process.

“If I had to sum up the experience, it’s the people who made it unforgettable. I’m so grateful to my teammates, Luca and Robi, and to our advisors, Bence Gál and Professor Miklós Kozma, who believed in us and pushed us to grow. Their guidance, thoughtful feedback, and genuine commitment to our development made a real difference, both in how we prepared and how we performed. It was also nice to work more closely with Robi, as he brought clear thinking and a steady, positive presence to the team. Besides, sharing the win with Luca, my best friend, made it all more meaningful. We didn’t just solve a case, we built something that reflects what case competitions are truly about: community, trust, and growing together.” – Éva Eszter Gombos

Congratulations to Évi, Luca, and Robi, as well as to their dedicated advisors. This win caps off their university journey in the best way possible. Special thanks to the Case Track professors, mentors, and alumni for their continuous support in preparing the team.
