A bear on the edge of town, a wolf near the flock, a lynx deep in the forest: when nature comes close to us, the news spreads fast. But how can we report on these stories in a way that informs the public accurately without creating unnecessary fear?
WWF Hungary and the Department of Communication and Media Science are organizing a practical workshop for journalists, media professionals, and students of communication and media science. The aim is to provide guidance on how to avoid exaggerated, sensationalist, or misleading narratives when reporting on wildlife, especially large carnivores.
Participants will gain insight into how different large carnivores have been represented in the Hungarian media in recent years and what impact these reports have had on public opinion. We will explore what to pay attention to when writing about species such as bears, wolves, or lynx, how to present situations accurately and with nuance, and what considerations can help promote coexistence.
WWF Hungary’s participation is supported by the European Union. The views and opinions expressed at the workshop are solely those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of the European Union, which cannot be held responsible for them.
