Corvinus Research Seminar on Asian Labour Migration

Combining national labor surplus with scarcity of formal employment, Indonesia has witnessed a new stage of labour outmigration. Traditionally, overseas labour migrants came from poor rural areas. As migration became more costly, combined with the opening of new migration corridors, middle-income families are increasingly aspiring to send their family members to work overseas. This shift in migrants’ capability has also shifted the directionality of migration from Asia to Europe. Europe, particularly Eastern Europe, has emerged as a new destination of Asian labour migration due to demographic and regulatory changes. In this talk, Dewanto will share his findings from a long-term multi-sited ethnography in Indonesia, Poland, and Hungary. The talk will be followed by an open master class for PhD students working on labour, migration, and related areas using qualitative methods.
