Faces of Public Governance #4

From Classroom Learning to Real-World Policy Practice

The study of public policy at Corvinus goes beyond theoretical foundations, placing a strong emphasis on the application of analytical knowledge in real-world contexts. This is well illustrated by the experience of Ben, a student from Tunisia, who transitioned from classroom learning to contributing to an international consultancy project.

“The program also provides valuable professional and networking opportunities. In my case, I had the pleasure of working as a Research Assistant under Dr. György Hajnal, Head of Department, on a consultancy project for the Food and Agriculture Organization. This experience allowed me to apply my theoretical knowledge in a real-world policy context while significantly strengthening my professional profile.

On a more personal note, I must say that the department has a supportive and close-knit academic environment, which made the learning experience even more enjoyable.” — Ben, Tunisia

This approach reflects the educational philosophy of the Department of Public Policy, where the integration of research, teaching, and practice is a core priority.

“One of the key benefits of studying public policy is the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to real-world challenges — locally, nationally, and globally. I actively involve students in real-life projects whenever possible, allowing them to experience how the concepts and methods they learn are used in practice.

This was the case with Ben: after acquiring knowledge in case study research and qualitative analysis, he joined a project with the Food and Agriculture Organization, contributing to the analysis of governance reforms in agrifood systems across Europe and Central Asia.” — Prof. György Hajnal, Head of Department

Students have the opportunity to engage with these approaches directly in courses such as Program and Performance Evaluation and Research Design and Qualitative Methods in Public Governance, both taught by Prof. György Hajnal. These courses are offered within the two-year Public Policy and Management MSc programme as well as the one-year Public Governance MSc programme.

The Corvinus programmes in public governance aim to equip students with the analytical tools and practical experience necessary to understand and shape complex policy processes in diverse institutional and international contexts.
