Business Informatics

Doctoral Programme

The programme aims to train specialists capable of independent scientific research, who can deeply understand real-world business processes and provide innovative IT solutions to the complex problems arising within them. Our training forms a bridge between cutting-edge IT toolsets and business value creation across the entire spectrum of enterprise architecture.

  • IT Value Creation: Examining all IT activities through the lens of enterprise architecture, from mapping business logic to system implementation.
  • Information Management: Managing data and knowledge assets, addressing regulatory issues of the information society, and governing information systems.
  • Intelligent Solutions: Researching the application possibilities of innovative info-communication technologies and developing intelligent systems.
  • Modelling and Analysis: Creating complex economic analyses and forecasts using modern IT and computational methodologies.

The doctoral school primarily builds upon the Business Informatics MSc programme but is open to applicants with other quantitative or IT backgrounds. We particularly welcome students from the following fields:

  • Insurance and Financial Mathematics,
  • Business Development, as well as Regional and Environmental Economics,
  • Computer Engineering and Computer Science programmes.

The knowledge acquired during the programme opens doors to independent academic careers, executive-level business consultancy, and solving research-and-innovation challenges within the technology sector.

Admission Information

The general rules of the admission procedure are set out in Sections 21–22 of the University Doctoral Regulations (EDSZ), which can be accessed by clicking here.

The list of required documents is available by clicking here!

The admission decision is a multi-stage process based on a professional review of the submitted application materials and the results of the oral interview. We plan to admit 8–15 students to the programme annually.

Key Evaluation Criteria

  • Academic Background: Grades in field-specific subjects and the quality of the Master’s thesis.
  • Scientific Achievement: Previous research results, publications, or Scientific Students’ Association (TDK) activities.
  • Research Potential: The professional depth and relevance of the submitted research proposal.

Requirements for the Research Proposal

Applicants to the Business Informatics programme must submit a detailed research plan (10–15 pages), structured as follows:

  • Title & Problem Statement: A precise title for the research and a brief summary of expected results.
  • Relevance & Literature Review: The timeliness of the chosen topic and a critical overview of the related international literature.
  • Methodology: Elaboration on the research problem, the chosen investigative approach, and the presentation of the methodology.
  • Schedule & Feasibility: Proof of the study’s feasibility and a chronological timeline.
  • Bibliography: A precise list of the sources used.

Oral Interview: The purpose of the oral interview, conducted in English, is to assess the applicant’s scientific aptitude and professional commitment. The interview is primarily held in person; however, in justified cases, participation via Microsoft Teams is also possible.

Evaluation Process

The admission decision is based on a preliminary review of the submitted application materials and the results of the oral interview.

Application Assessment Criteria

  • Academic performance in field-specific subjects.
  • The topic and grade of the Master’s thesis.
  • Scientific activity (e.g., results from the Scientific Students’ Association/TDK).
  • Motivation Letter: In this doctoral school, we require a motivation letter (max. 3 pages) instead of a research proposal. It should address the following:
    • Your motivation for joining the programme.
    • Your previous research experience and skills.
    • A brief outline of the research topics and methods that interest you.

Oral Interview

The committee assesses the applicant’s professional commitment and scientific aptitude. If the applicant does not hold a language certificate, their English proficiency will also be verified during the interview. In the 2026 admission cycle, interviews are primarily held in person, though online participation (via Microsoft Teams) is possible in justified cases.
