Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies (CIAS): An international hub for research excellence in the heart of Central Europe
CIAS is Corvinus’ hub for research excellence and international scholarly engagement. CIAS advances these aims by (1) operating research centres with permanent researchers (core faculty) and (2) hosting visiting research fellows (visiting faculty) and enabling sustained, on-site collaboration with Corvinus faculty and students. Fellowships are offered for 5- or 10-month periods in the Junior, Senior, and Non-resident Senior categories; an Invited Distinguished category is also available. Candidates with existing collaborations at Corvinus and those initiating new partnerships are equally welcome; in both cases, CIAS provides structured support to facilitate joint research, dissemination, grant application, and engagement within the University’s scholarly community.
Situated in the heart of Central Europe, Budapest offers a concentrated academic ecosystem, with multiple universities, research institutes and libraries, archives, and policy institutes within easy reach of Corvinus, while also serving as a practical gateway to regional partners and comparative field sites. The city’s active culture, spanning department colloquia, institute workshops, and visiting lectures, provides a steady cadence of feedback that helps move projects from draft to submission. CIAS itself is located at the Danube’s bank, on the seventh floor of the Corvinus new building, with an expansive view over the city that creates a quiet, well-equipped setting for focused work and collegial conversation. Fellows benefit from robust research infrastructure, as well as a manageable urban environment with short commutes, walkable districts, and a rich cultural life that together support sustained scholarly collaboration.
CIAS is the international research excellence hub of Corvinus University in Budapest. Our objective is to foster the development and dissemination of advanced knowledge in our respective disciplines of study, as well as to facilitate professional collaboration among scholars and other societal stakeholders. We seek to achieve this goal in two ways: by operating research centres with permanently appointed researchers and by offering visiting research fellowships (henceforth referred to as Fellowship) to outstanding international scholars.
CIAS offers its Fellowship for a 5- or 10-month duration for Junior, Senior, or Non-resident Senior Researchers. We also provide Fellowships for invited distinguished research fellows for shorter durations, but for a minimum of 1 month.
We are pleased to accept candidates who already cooperate with one of the Institutes or Research Centres at Corvinus, as well as those who have not yet established an active connection (they will receive support to initiate joint work with our faculty).
“This opportunity has exceeded my expectations in every respect, I find the atmosphere at CIAS very friendly and the excellent scientific work in a wide variety of fields is being done at the institute, which is productive for individual research.”
“I would recommend to any interested researcher that, if they have the opportunity, they try to take a break from their daily routine and come to CIAS for a longer period of time. This is how they can really benefit from the interdisciplinary profile of the institute and the many different types of research that go on at CIAS.”
“I think Budapest is an absolutely livable and likeable city for foreigners too, I really enjoy the fact that almost everyone here speaks English, I’ve never really felt lost in this city.”[...]“From the very beginning, I have found great partners and co-authors in CIAS and the University. Researchers, who have provided valuable perspectives collaborate with me in my interdisciplinary approach to my research topics."
„The CIAS Fellowship also offers me the opportunity to learn about the operations of an internationally recognized business school outside my home country [...] I really like the contrasting vibe of Budapest, where gorgeous historic buildings meet trendy ruined bars.”
“Knowledge orientation and a modern urban academic spirit permeate the whole university. Even within the walls, you can feel the pulse and momentum of the downtown. In the community spaces, I met enthusiastic groups of students working on projects day by day. And at CIAS, they gave me all the tools I needed to focus exclusively on my research."
„[...] one of the pillars of the success of CIAS is being open to applicants with whom they have had no previous contact, and this is one of the ways in which they can ensure a high international standard. [...] They are very good at matching people who work here, and it gives you a feeling of actually being home.”

The application is considered complete by the Dean’s Office of CIAS once the following stages have been submitted or completed:
| Category | List of requirements |
| Basic eligibility criteria (applicable to all categories) |
|
| Junior CIAS Research Fellow |
|
| Senior CIAS Research Fellow |
|
| Non-resident Senior CIAS Research Fellow | |
| Invited Distinguished CIAS Research Fellow |
|
Applications must be submitted by the stated deadline (non-negotiable). Each eligible file is then peer-reviewed independently and anonymously by two senior experts in the applicant’s field. Based on these evaluations, CIAS compiles a short list, and short-listed candidates are invited to a 15-minute oral interview (online). Following the interviews, the selection panel determines the final list of awardees. Key dates for each stage are provided below.
Evaluation principles and scoring. The evaluation prioritises research excellence. In addition to meeting the basic and category-specific criteria, candidates who demonstrate outstanding performance in the areas below receive additional weight in scoring:
Invited Distinguished Fellows. Invited Distinguished Research Fellows are evaluated based on unique expectations that differ case-by-case.
The Statement of Proposed Activity (research plan) is a key component and is assessed for originality, feasibility, fit with CIAS/Corvinus, and anticipated scholarly contribution.
Transparency. We report to applicants (1) the average score assigned by the two reviewers and (2) the minimum score required for an award in the relevant category. We do not disclose sub-scores or reviewer-specific breakdowns.
CIAS Fellows must meet the following conditions during their Fellowship period:
We are pleased to accept candidates who already cooperate with one of the Institutes or Research Centres at Corvinus, as well as those who have not yet established an active connection (they will receive support to initiate joint work with our faculty).

Other professional activities undertaken by CIAS Fellows are welcome, but not required. However, the final instalment of the Fellowship is only transferable, if the requisite work is submitted to an acceptable journal.
A Fellowship may be awarded once every 5 years in the same category. A previous unsuccessful application does not preclude somebody from applying again, however, after successfully completing a Fellowship, the application will be refused for the next 5 years.

Further information about the professors’ apartments will be provided with the acceptance letter, due to the limited number of available apartments. The Fellows’ financial support from CIAS must cover all their costs, including but not limited to accommodation, travel expenses, and insurance.
CIAS provides varying levels of financial support for each Fellowship category, as shown in Table 2. In many countries, including Hungary, the presented amount of the Fellowship is considered income, hence it represents the total amount before taxes. The candidates have several options when it comes to taxes:
A Service Contract for research that provides the following options is available to those who do not want to apply for the scholarship or who do not match the above requirements:
The above-mentioned options apply to countries that have an active international treaty with Hungary aimed at avoiding double taxation. In every other case, special tax legislations apply.
Although CIAS and Corvinus can offer information on Hungarian tax laws, it is the Fellow’s responsibility to obtain all relevant data from their home country and make their own taxation decisions. After a taxation decision has been made, neither the Fellow nor Corvinus can modify it.
[1] If the Candidate is awarded the Fellowship, this criterion is automatically satisfied.
Housing is arranged individually by the Fellow, but if it is needed the University/CIAS can provide orientation in finding a good solution.
