The Hungarian Academy of Sciences presented its most prestigious awards — including the Academy Award — at its 199th ceremonial general assembly this May. The academy’s leadership awards the prestigious prize, established in 1960, each year to 11 researchers or research groups engaged in scientific work, in acknowledgment of their outstanding research achievements and results in recent years, as well as their scholarly books and publications.

In 2025, the award was presented, among others, to Dr. Attila Melegh, who is a sociologist, historian, doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, full professor at the Corvinus University of Budapest and researcher at the Population Research Institute of the Central Statistical Office. His research interests include migration, global social change and demographic discourses. During his career, he has received several prestigious international awards, including being elected a Fellow of the Academia Europaea in 2024 and being awarded the Karl Polányi Visiting Professorship at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. He was awarded the prize for these and for his leadership and participation in several major international research projects.
