Bees on the financial market – Portfolio interviews Helena Naffa

Portfolio wanted to learn what biodiversity-friendly finance means and how the value of nature can be built into financial decision-making. Sustainable economic development and the protection of biological diversity come together in the work of the Sustainable Finance Research Centre (SFRC) at Corvinus University of Budapest.

Helena Naffa, the centre’s founding director, also presented the BioSolar project, which focuses on nature-positive solar parks, and the NatureFIN project, which supports local governments in development planning. The interview took place in the Corvinus FinLab, which is fitting, as the lab’s terminals already display real-time financial market data alongside indicators related to biodiversity.

As Helena Naffa puts it:

Thanks to satellite monitoring and image recognition, we can now assess the state of ecosystems and the risk of environmental damage quickly and across large areas. This can replace part of the slow, manual data collection and offer an objective view of the natural risks that may threaten a company’s sites. The data gathered this way directly supports bank risk assessment, supplier selection and the planning of new locations.”
