Alternative Answers to the Housing Question – International Conference

The College for Advanced Studies in Social Theory (TEK) at Corvinus University of Budapest has issued a call for abstracts for the interdisciplinary conference titled Alternative Answers to the Housing Question – Rethinking Housing Beyond the Market: Crisis, Critique, and Collective Futures, which will take place on 7 August 2026 in Budapest.
The aim of the conference is to collectively examine the structural causes of today’s housing crisis and to foster dialogue on housing alternatives that go beyond market logic, focusing on community-based and decommodified forms of housing.
Who can apply?
The call is open to researchers, professionals, and activists in sociology, political economy, urban studies, geography, anthropology, law, and related fields.
Application requirements
For individual presentations, applicants must submit an abstract of up to 500 words in English, along with up to five keywords. Panel proposals are also welcome.
The organizers welcome abstracts addressing (but not limited to) the following topics:
- Structural analyses of the housing crisis
- Historical approaches
- Non-market housing models
- Community-based and grassroots initiatives
- Policy alternatives and systemic transformations
- Housing and social inequalities
- Urban–rural and regional disparities
