The documentary Baljós közelség examines the historical, political, and social contexts of the war in Ukraine, paying particular attention to the conflict’s embeddedness in East-Central Europe and its everyday consequences. The film goes beyond a chronological presentation of events; it seeks to uncover the historical narratives, identity-shaping factors, and linguistic dimensions underlying the war.

The production was supported by several distinguished scholars. The historical background and interpretation of sources were developed with the contribution of Márta Font, Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; Iván Halász, Head of the Department of Constitutional Law and Comparative Public Law at the University of Public Service; and Viktória Lebovics, linguist and Assistant Professor at Eötvös Loránd University. The linguistic and cultural context was further enriched by the contribution of Okszana Taskovics, lecturer at the Department of Ukrainian Philology at ELTE.

The professional work was also supported by our university colleague, András Bencze, Institute Referent at the Institute of Strategy and Management, who assisted the director as a historical expert, particularly in clarifying the historical context and interpreting long-term processes.

The film places strong emphasis on presenting the historical experiences of the region, the questions of statehood and sovereignty, and the ways in which political and linguistic narratives shape public opinion and international discourse. While the historians shed light on long-term historical developments, the legal and linguistic experts draw attention to contemporary interpretative frameworks and identity-forming dynamics.

Baljós közelség provides not only a documentary-style snapshot of the war in Ukraine, but also a scientifically grounded, interdisciplinary approach that contributes to a deeper understanding of the conflict.
