One of Budapest’s most significant open urban development initiatives of the past fifty years—the Rákosrendező masterplan design competition focusing on urban planning and public space development—has been concluded. On March 31, the jury selected the winning proposal that may serve as the basis for the comprehensive regeneration of one of the city’s largest brownfield areas. 

The aim of the competition was to develop a concept for a new urban district that responds to 21st-century urban development challenges—particularly housing and climate change—while creating a livable, sustainable, and resilient environment in the long term. The jury operated as a broad, multidisciplinary body, bringing together architects, urban planners, as well as city development experts from Vienna and Prague. 

Representing Corvinus University of Budapest, János Balázs Kocsis, urban sociologist and Associate Professor at the Institute of Sustainable Development, participated in the work of the jury, contributing to the high-quality professional evaluation of the submissions while also reflecting the university’s engagement in urban development discourse. 

 Based on the jury’s decision, the winner of the competition is the international team composed of Coldefy et Associés Architectes Urbanistes, CITYFÖRSTER, Sporaarchitects, Treibhaus Landschaftsarchitektur, and Marko and Placemakers. 

The display boards of the submitted proposals can be viewed at the Kristály Színtér, the venue of the awards ceremony, from April 13 to 30, 2026, on weekdays between 10:00 and 18:00.
