Although American cities differ in their history, size, and scale, many of their challenges overlap. Some of the most notable issues include homelessness and cleanliness, transportation-oriented design, and funding complexities in both the public and private sectors. In urban planning, many of these are considered “wicked problems,” meaning they lack clear or definitive solutions. As a result, much of the U.S. planning work focuses on mitigating rather than completely resolving these challenges. In this presentation, we will explore these issues in greater detail and discuss theories that may guide future solutions. By the end, you should be able to identify at least one design approach and one policy approach to enhance your understanding of urban development.
