Since the term of office of Dr. András Lánczi expires on 30 June 2021, the Maecenas Universitatis Corvini Foundation, which maintains the Corvinus University of Budapest, was calling for applications for the performance of the duties of the university’s Rector.

Dr. András Lánczi led Corvinus for six years as Rector, stabilising the university both economically and professionally. He supported academic development matters that opened the window to the world, such as the renewal of the organisational and content framework of the doctoral schools or the establishment of the Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies. He recognised the lack of competitiveness in the Hungarian higher education, and successfully prepared Corvinus for the transition to the new operational structure. The university would like to thank Dr. András Lánczi for his indisputable merits, and wishes him success in his future work.

Following the support of the Senate of Corvinus University, the Board of Trustees of the Maecenas Universitatis Corvini Foundation initiated the appointment of Dr. Előd Takáts. On 24 June 2021, President János Áder appointed him to the post in person. The new Rector will take office on 1 August 2021.

The plans of Dr. Előd Takáts as Rector include the creation of experiential education resulting in lasting knowledge and the transfer of knowledge that provides students competitive knowledge.

The new Rector is a Corvinus alumnus as well. He graduated from Corvinus’ legal predecessor, the Budapest University of Economics, in 1999, majoring in financial and economic policy. He passed the stock exchange exam in 2000, and obtained a master’s degree in economics in 2002 at the Central European University. He received an MA in Economics from Princeton University in 2004, and a PhD in 2006.

He worked as a researcher at the European Central Bank, the Central Bank of Hungary, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the International Monetary Fund. Since 2009, he has been an economist and then Principal Economist at the Basel-based Bank for International Settlements. He has been a Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science since 2018. In 2019, he was appointed professor emeritus of the Corvinus University of Budapest. In 2021, the Senate of Corvinus supported his application for a professorship, and was then appointed a university professor by the President of Hungary. Dr. Előd Takáts conducts research in the joint fields of finance, macroeconomics and monetary policy. His latest areas of research are demography and the economics of climate change.
