In addition to his school creating work in the field of mathematical economics and economic modelling, between 1986 and 1991, Ernő Zalai, as the international vice-rector, was the leader of the university’s modernisation reform, and thus of the initiative, which fundamentally renewed and defined Hungarian economic higher education and is still based on the principles that still apply today. He played a leading role in the launch of modern public service training in Hungary, as well as in the organisation of the introduction of a new type of doctoral (PhD) training.

Besides his family, he is mourned by his friends and his university and academic colleagues.

His memory will be cherished.
