Travel discounts for students: what you need to know

Discounted county and national passes
Students enrolled in full-time or evening programmes are eligible for discounted county and national passes with a valid full-time or evening student ID card. When personalising the pass, you must provide either the card number of your student ID or the number of a valid identity document.
- Please note that you must present both your student ID and a valid identity document during ticket or pass inspections. The document indicated on the pass must match the document presented during the inspection.
50% discount on tickets for those aged 14–25
Young people between the ages of 14 and 25 can purchase tickets at a 50% discount for intercity travel by presenting a valid identity document. A student ID is not required for this discount; age must be verified with a valid identity document.
Buying tickets and passes online: what should you know?
Tickets and passes purchased through MÁV’s online platforms – including the MÁV+ app, the MÁV app, and the jegy.mav.hu website – are always personalised. When making a purchase, you must provide your name and date of birth, which will be verified using a valid identity document.
If you use a paper-based pass
Paper-based passes printed on thermal paper should be protected from heat, moisture and friction. Do not laminate your paper-based pass, as the heat generated during lamination can make it illegible.
If the text on your pass starts to fade, it is recommended that you visit a MÁV ticket office or customer service point as soon as possible. MÁV will replace damaged passes free of charge as long as the barcode can still be scanned or the serial number is still fully legible.
- Tip: MÁV also recommends using an online pass instead of a paper-based one. This is more convenient and helps you avoid issues caused by damage to paper-based passes.
Safe travels and have a great academic year!
