The Foreign-Language Professional Competence criterion subject may be registered in any active semester in accordance with the rules governing course registration.

However, for bachelor’s and undivided master’s programmes, completion is recommended from the fifth semester, while for divided (two-cycle) master’s programmes, it is recommended from the first semester. Nevertheless, students may attempt completion in any active semester during their studies.

Competency Test in a Foreign Language for Specific Purposes I.

The requirement applies to students who began their studies:

According to a government decision effective from 20 December 2022, possession of a language certificate is no longer a condition for issuing a diploma. Therefore, students who began their studies before September 2021 do not need either a language certificate or a language criterion examination in order to take the final examination.

For students who change programmes, the determining factor is the semester in which the new programme begins.

The University offers the foreign language for specific purposes competence assessment in the following languages:

The required level is B2-level professional language competence in Economics or International Relations.

The elective 3-credit professional language courses offered by the Centre for Foreign Language Education (IOK) provide preparation for acquiring the required foreign language for specific purposes competence, depending on the student’s entry level. Preparation may also be supported through subjects completed in a language different from the language of instruction of the programme, as specified in the sample curriculum.

The University provides language instruction free of charge or for a fee, depending on the type of programme, the language, and the language level. Fees for language courses are specified in Appendix 2 of the Regulations on Student Fees and Benefits (RSFB).

In many programmes, foreign-language courses may be taken as elective subjects in 2×2 weekly blocks worth 3+3 credits free of charge, or in a fee-paying 0-credit format as a language-learning opportunity for two semesters. Additional opportunities are available through subjects offered in a living foreign language other than the language of instruction of the programme.

The examination may be waived in any of the following ways:

1) By holding a recognised language qualification

The requirement may be fulfilled by presenting one of the following, obtained in a living foreign language other than the language of instruction of the student’s programme:

*An upper secondary school leaving certificate obtained at a foreign educational institution or a diploma awarded by a recognised foreign higher education institution is considered equivalent to a state-recognised, monolingual, comprehensive advanced (C1) language examination.

2) By completing studies abroad

The requirement may be fulfilled by completing studies in a foreign-language study abroad programme, joint programme or double-degree programme, conducted in a living foreign language other than the language of instruction of the student’s programme, provided that the student has completed at least 21 credits in that language.

The requirement may be fulfilled by completing at least four (4) weeks of professional internship abroad, where the working language throughout the internship was a living foreign language other than the language of instruction of the student’s programme.

1. A written internship report approved and signed by the workplace supervisor.

2. An official Workplace Supervisor’s Evaluation (certificate-of-employment-template.4ab.docx), completed, signed and stamped by the designated workplace supervisor.

The evaluation, or an official attachment to it, must clearly confirm that:

4) By completing courses in another foreign language

The requirement may be fulfilled by completing at least 30 credits in courses listed in the curriculum that are taught in a living foreign language other than the language of instruction of the student’s programme.

5) By submitting a Scientific Students’ Associations Conference (TDK) paper

The requirement may be fulfilled by submitting a TDK paper written in a living foreign language other than the language of instruction of the student’s programme, provided that the student:

The requirement may be fulfilled through participation in an international academic or professional competition conducted in a living foreign language other than the language of instruction of the student’s programme, provided that the student demonstrated their competence both orally and in writing in that language.

If you wish to have the examination requirement waived based on one of the achievements listed above, you should register for the IOK0334NABB/IOK0332NABB Competency Test in a Foreign Language for Specific Purposes I. course only after your achievement can be officially verified. (For courses completed in English or German and recorded in Neptun, this means registering in the semester following successful completion.)

You must then submit a course-related request in Neptun via: Subjects → Course-related Requests → Available Requests

Select the request entitled: “I401 – Completion of Foreign Language for Specific Purposes course” and attach all supporting documentation.

The request is available until the end of the semester.

In other programmes, determining these requirements falls within the University’s authority and they are specified in the curriculum/programme description.
