The role of competition policy in Hungary’s economic recovery

Date: 01 October 2026, 16:00-18:00
Location: Corvinus University of Budapest
Language of the event: Hungarian
The Hungarian economy has not performed well in recent years, whilst certain structural problems – such as low and stagnant productivity – have been evident for years. The weakening of market competition, as well as the inadequate and, in some cases, politically motivated enforcement of competition law, have played a significant role in the emergence of this unfavorable situation. Hungary’s economic recovery therefore depends not only on fiscal and investment measures, but also on the creation of a well-functioning, competitive market environment.
The role of market competition and competition policy in economic growth is often underestimated, and this needs to change. For this reason, at a joint event organized by Corvinus University of Budapest and the Centre for Competition Policy at the University of East Anglia, we will examine how competition policy can act as a driving force for economic recovery: how the effective enforcement of competition law can contribute to productivity, business dynamism and long-term growth. The event brings together economists, lawyers, practitioners, academics and decision-makers to address issues that are particularly relevant to Hungary’s current economic policy agenda.
