After last year’s success, we are organizing our community planting event again this year, where you can replant your office plants in more sustainable compost instead of traditional potting soil. It is important that you bring (preferably reused) plastic pots to the planting in which you want to plant. And if you have any spare pots at home, bring them in too, in case someone else could use them for the planting.
Tools (gloves, small shovel, watering can) are limited, so bring what you might need – unless you want to miss out on kneading the soil with your own hands, of course. We also re-use empty plastic pots to reduce the number of new ones we have to use, thus reducing waste production.
After the planting, we will also present the lessons learned from the first year of our dormitory composting project, piloted at EVK and Rajk, where, in addition to presentations from compost master students, we will also invite our community partner, Tünde Udvarnoki, who designs and manufactures COMPOT indoor composters, and also a Corvinus Alumni.
We welcome both our staff and students to the program. Especially those who would like to join the project from September as a department, college or student organization in the second phase and adopt their own office or dormitory indoor composter as a compost master.
Planned program:
16:30 – 17:30 I Planting in sustainable compost
17:30 – 18:30 I Dormitory compost project presentation, introduction to composting and presentation of the Corvinus Science Shop LOESS – Soil Health in Education project
18:30 – 19:00 I Questions, networking, plans for the next academic year
Why is it worth participating in the program? In addition to the social experience, there was also knowledge-sharing among colleagues last year. For example, there were plants whose names were identified together, and more experienced gardeners also shared their planting practices. We even exchanged plants, and the transplanting of seedlings increased the plant population. This is a good example of why it’s worth taking action as well as planning, and in the process, you can experience, learn and further shape sustainability.
Why is it worth composting instead of traditional potting soil? The good quality compost purchased from the composting facility was made from organic material taken from the municipalities, contributing to a circular economic model. It does not contain fertilizers and other added chemicals. It is also peat-free, which contributes to reducing the carbon footprint and conserving habitats. We will reuse the bags used for transport next time, so we can also reduce the amount of packaging waste.
The community planting was launched last spring as part of the Sustainability Theme of the Month Project, and the dormitory composting was launched last autumn as a pilot, both as part of the Corvinus Green project.
