Book Launch: Denial, Deterrence, and Disenchantment: Why Many Never Immigrate
9 Nov. 2026, 1:40 PM - 3:10 PM
On behalf of the Global Mobility Research Group and the Contemporary Asia Research Group, we would like to invite you to the launch of Jacob Thomas’ (Corvinus, Department of Sociology) book Denial, Deterrence, and Disenchantment: Why Many Never Immigrate, just out with Cambridge University Press.

Venue: C510
Language: English
Based on research in China, the book asks why many people consider leaving their country but never do. It examines three mechanisms: denial of visas, deterrence of many from applying for visas, and disenchantment with migration. Jacob Thomas extends the push-pull model of migration into a push-retain-pull-repel model, providing evidence that retain factors in sending countries and repel factors in destination societies counteract and sometimes outweigh the push and pull factors that motivate migration.
An introduction to the book by the author will be followed by comments by Professor Melegh Attila.
