Lecture by Zdeněk Rod (CEVRO University)

On the evening of September 22, 2026, Zdeněk Rod, a lecturer and researcher at CEVRO University in Prague, was a guest of the IR TALKS event series of the Department of International Relations, hosted by Péter Marton. In his presentation, Dr. Rod introduced his recently published book (“Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Afghanistan: Navigating the Security-Development Nexus”, Routledge, 2026), in which he reviewed the record of the Provincial Reconstruction Teams that operated in Afghanistan between 2002 and 2014, viewed as an experiment that yielded unique and varied approaches and mostly unsatisfactory outcomes from the attempt to put the concept of the “security-development nexus” into practice. Dr. Rod used vivid examples to illustrate why the models concerned proved ineffective. The audience remained engaged long after the presentation ended, and the ongoing discussion was brought to a close only once the university building had gradually begun to go dark at the very end of the working day.
