Migration and “Empire” in Northeast Asia: Indentured Labor in China and Japan and its Governance in the Nineteenth Century.

This lecture examines the role of Chinese contract labour in shaping the legal framework of immigration in the 19th century. It focuses on the Japanese legal system, and analyses the role of British and other imperial institutions in governing labour recruitment.
Lecturer: Professor Igor Saveliev, Nagoya University
Igor Saveliev is one of Japan’s leading historians of migration. His research has focused on Russian, Japanese, and Chinese migrations in the colonial and postcolonial eras and on demographic change and contemporary Asian immigration in Japan.
