Senior Research Fellow and Head of Research Group – AÉB/43/2025

Corvinus University of Budapest is Hungary’s leading university in the field of economics and social sciences. The Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies (CIAS) announces an open call for applications for the Senior Research Fellow and Head of Research Group position for indefinite period.

The starting date is spring semester 2026. (January 2026)

We are looking for a full-time Senior Research Fellow to lead the Center for Collective Learning (CCL) at Corvinus University of Budapest.

About the Centre for Collective Learning (CCL):

The Center for Collective Learning (CCL) is a growing hub for data science research, with a focus on economic geography, complex systems, and applied artificial intelligence. Under the leadership of Professor César A. Hidalgo, CCL has grown into an international center funded by multiple awards, including an ERA Chair, an ERC Synergy, two Horizon consortia projects, and other cross european funding schemes.

By working closely with other groups at Corvinus University–such as ANETI–CCL aims to grow into a leading global center for data and network science. CCL is already having an impact in Hungary and Central and Eastern Europe by equipping society with the skills needed to undertake global challenges.

CCL at Corvinus University of Budapest is funded by a European Research Executive Agency (ERA) Chair of the Horizon Europe Programme. ERA Chairs are 5-year awards designed to promote institutional change, international mobility, and research excellence.

CCL at Corvinus University is composed of three research groups: the Organizational Dynamics group, led by professor Rebeka O’Szabo, the Computational Inequalities Group, led by professor Orsolya Vásárhelyi, and the Collective Learning group, led by professor César A. Hidalgo.

About you:

  • The ideal candidate has a doctoral degree in Computer Science, Economics, Physics, Data Science, Engineering, Management, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Network Science, Computational Social Science, or in a related field.
  • The candidate has reached associate professorship in their academic career or could be considered for a position at that level.
  • The ideal candidate is fluent in English.
  • The candidate should be experienced in managing a research group and with the reporting duties of European projects.
  • The candidate should have a good/strong publication record.
  • The candidate should exhibit excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to represent the laboratory at both internal and external events.
  • You are motivated to work in a multidisciplinary team and are excited by the research produced at CCL.

Job description and key duties:

Research duties:

  • Writing articles for prestigious international and domestic journal in the field of Computer Science, Economics, Data Science, Management, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Network Science, Computational Social Science, Complex Systems, or in a related field
  • Participating at important international and domestic conferences, building international scientific relationships, getting involved in research projects, active research application activity in the field of Computer Science, Economics, Data Science, Management, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Network Science, Computational Social Science, or in a related field thus securing the resources of the research projects and contributing to the internationalisation of the Institute, the Research Group and the University.

Teaching duties:

  • Teaching in weekly class hours as defined by the Academic Career Model. (3 hours/week)

Service duties

  • Active participation in the professional life of the Corvinus Institute for Advanced Studies, the Center for Collective Learning and the University, performing service tasks determined by the head of the Institute.
  • Supporting early-career academics at the university, including PhD supervision and mentoring for competitions.
  • Mentoring assistant professor colleagues in the Institute.
  • Participation in the reporting process for the ERA Chair grant.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Doctorate obtained at least 3 years before in Computer Science, Economics, Physics, Data Science, Engineering, Management, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Network Science, Computational Social Science, or in a related field.
  • Research activity (on international level) and publication of research results in highly ranked (Q1) international scientific journals with 3 authors and the applicant is first or corresponding author
  • Prior experience in the supervision of at least 1 doctoral student (co-supervision is possible), or as senior researcher works with a younger researcher, or supervisor in student competition, or principal investigator of a project which involves younger colleagues or PhD students with the objective to introduce/improve them to/in research.
  • Experience in research group management and with the reporting duties of European projects.
  • Teaching experience gained in higher education: minimum 400 contact hours taught in sum, from which 40 in English language
  • Fluent English
  • Please note that the minimum requirenment of the position is X citations, H index: min. 5, and a student evaluation of 4.0 (or equivalent)
