Lecture on Xi Zhongxun Sparks Lively Discussion at Corvinus University
The Political Economy Research Group of the Institute of Social and Political Sciences hosted a thought-provoking lecture by Joseph Torigian, Associate Professor at the School of International Service, American University, on 4 November 2025.

Titled “The Party’s Interests Come First: The Life of Xi Zhongxun, Father of Xi Jinping,” the talk offered fascinating insights into the life and political trajectory of Xi Zhongxun, a key revolutionary figure and the father of China’s current leader, Xi Jinping. Drawing on his extensive research on elite politics and leadership transitions in China and Russia, Professor Torigian illuminated the inner workings of the Chinese Communist Party and the complex interplay between ideology, personal networks, and political survival.
The presentation was followed by a lively and insightful discussion involving students from the Political Economy MSc program as well as colleagues from within and beyond the Faculty. Participants raised thought-provoking questions on topics such as authoritarian governance, political legitimacy, and comparative leadership dynamics. The exchange fostered a stimulating intellectual atmosphere and underscored the Corvinus community’s ongoing interest in contemporary Chinese politics.
