2021-04-14 13:27:36

Application has been extended until May 09!

What can a recent graduate do after graduating from university? Many follow the usual path, take a full-time job, start moving up the ranks, but there are those who choose to apply for doctoral training – even while working. We’ve been researching, yet why it’s worth getting a PhD, how bumpy the road to there is, and what the options are for anyone who chooses to cut into it.

Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem

Doctoral training is a commitment for quite a few years, but Gábor Michalkó, director general of the Corvinus Doctoral Schools, head of the Doctoral School of Economics, professor of the Department of Tourism at the Institute of Marketing, says it is a very good investment in the long run.

At Corvinus, applicants are currently invited to four doctoral schools, with 15-20 people per school to start training. It is a so-called two-way doctoral program that offers academic careers for those wishing to pursue higher education / research and expert careers for those wishing to put science into practice.

Yet why can an academic career be attractive to young people?

According to Gábor Michalkó, those who value diversity, self-realization is important to them, like to work with others and are driven by curiosity apply for doctoral training from the outset.

Knowledge can already be changed to small money during years of training: the student can take courses at the university, receive researcher scholarships, participate in smaller or larger scientific projects, and there are many those who lose their jobs.

Although it is a full-time program, doctoral schools offer a degree of flexibility and freedom, which is why it can be attractive to many, including doctoral students, business leaders or even diplomats, who have to coordinate their training responsibilities and daily work.
Gábor Michalkó remarked, since there are foreign students, the language of instruction is English.
He said about what to expect from those who specifically want to research and teach. The beginning of the journey is bumpy and full of challenges, but according to Michalkó, it is worth it, because one can constantly learn and develop, one teaches patience and commitment.

In addition to joy, of course, as in all fields, there are failures: discarded articles, unsuccessful applications, many criticisms, but the balance is positive, according to the professor: doctoral training is elite training, participants have the knowledge, attitudes and they acquire a way of thinking, analytical, evaluative and communicative skills, a system of relationships that will be a huge advantage later on, whether in scientific life or at a company.
