While doctoral training is the crowning glory of the individual’s studies, for the institution, the crown of the training palette is the most beautiful shimmering diamond, and therefore deserves extraordinary attention from both parties. On the one hand, the doctoral program in Hungary is an elite program provided to the most talented with the best-trained lecturers, and, on the other hand, mass training, as society is in dire need of a large number of specialists trained in scientific research.

Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem

At Corvinus University of Budapest and its predecessor institutions since 1993 doctoral program have been taking place providing PhD degree. During the transformation, a total of four doctoral schools remained from the seven doctoral schools by merging six doctoral schools with two and preserving their independence. This volume is commensurate with the size and strategic objectives of the university.

The aim of the renewal of doctoral schools, ie their transformation into a scientific workshop, is to increase the efficiency of operation, the quality of the program and to integrate the programs more effectively into the research ecosystem of the university. Therefore, from 1 July 2020, in the framework of the University’s Renewal Program, the education of young students will continue in four doctoral schools:

  • Doctoral School of Management,
  • Doctoral School of Economics and Economic Informatics,
  • Doctoral School of Sociology and Communication Science.
  • Doctoral School of International Relations and Political Science,

The most important change in the content of the program that is not primarily based on the knowledge acquired in the courses, but rather on the skills that can be acquired in research. Gábor Michalkó, General Director, Head of the Corvinus Doctoral Schools, stated the following:
The transformation, of course, involves not only a name change, but also a comprehensive, complex development based on three legs: organizational and content renewal, as well as quality development. It has benefits such as more research opportunities for students than ever before or a more colorful program palette. In addition, there are a number of programs to choose from in schools, and there are opportunities to make effective use of synergies. The merged schools can collaborate with professionals, researchers, supervisors and fellow students who can open up countless new opportunities for doctoral students, supporting them in academic work, not only until the end of the program, but even later. The number of courses is declining compared to previous years, and instead of lexical expertise, the emphasis is on classes in research methodology and academic careers.

A key factor in realizing the “workshop from school” philosophy is to reduce the knowledge-centricity and increase the ability-orientation of doctoral training.
