Come and join the next Economania Lecture organised by the MNB Institute

The Economania series of lectures started in 2016 and is organised by the MNB Institute with the intention of bringing leading international lecturers to Corvinus University. In the past five years Corvinus faculty and students have had the chance to listen to such experts as George Osborne (former British Chancellor of the Exchequer), Willem Buiter (former member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England, currently Special Economic Adviser to Citigroup), Tomohiko Taniguchi (Special Advisor to the Cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe), Jun Qian (Executive Dean at Fanhai International School of Finance, Fudan University), Athanasios Orphanides (Professor of the Practice of Global Economics and Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management), Jan Kregel (director of research at the Levy Economics Institute) and Kenneth Rogoff (Professor of Economics, Harvard University). 

The next guest of the series on 20 April 2021 will be Arthur E. Wilmarth, Jr, Professor Emeritus of Law, George Washington University Law School. After 11 years in private law practice Professor Wilmarth joined the George Washington University Law School in 1986. During his 34 years as a member of the faculty, he taught courses in banking law, contracts, corporations, professional responsibility and American constitutional history. So far, he has published more than 40 law review articles and book chapters in the fields of financial regulation and American constitutional history. He is the author of the book “Taming the Megabanks: Why We Need a New Glass-Steagall Act” (Oxford University Press, 2020), and co-editor of “The Panic of 2008: Causes, Consequences, and Implications for Reform” (Edward Elgar, 2010). Besides his university career he has taken on a number of positions in various committees and commissions, as well as on American and international advisory boards.

In his Economania lecture he is going to discuss the topic of his 2020 book, according to which universal banks played central roles in precipitating the Great Depression of the early 1930s and the Great Recession of 2007–2009. He is also going to argue for measures urgently needed to restore a financial system that is less risky, more stable and resilient, and better able to serve the needs of our economy and society.
