| Zsolt Tulassayis a PhD candidate at the Department of Finance, Corvinus University and an Associate at Morgan Stanley. He graduated from the Budapest University of Economics, from which he holds an MSc degree in Finance. He also received an MA degree in Economics from Central European University. From 2007 to 2010 he worked as an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Finance at Corvinus University. His research interests include derivatives pricing, liquidity and microstructure of financial markets and heterogeneous agent based modeling. He is a former junior fellow of Collegium Budapest and a receiver of the Junior Prima award for teaching excellence. Currently he works at the Market Risk department at Morgan Stanley where he is responsible for reviewing pricing models for credit and interest rate derivatives. |
An empirical analysis of liquidity and market impact on the interbank EUR/HUF market
Abstract
We examine statistical features of order placement and price impact in the interbank spot EUR/HUF foreign exchange market, using order book data from the dominant electronic trading platform (the Reuters D3000 Spot Matching electronic trading system). The analysis reveals a number of similarities to existing studies of stock markets. Most importantly, transaction-level fluctuations of the logarithmic midprice are only weakly dependent on the size of the order initiating the transaction (the dependence is, however, somewhat stronger than in stock markets). This suggests that extreme transaction-level returns are driven by fluctuations in liquidity and not by large orders. Additionally, we observe a significant degree of strategic order submission as well, ie. market participants condition their orders on available liquidity. However, there are also some characteristics which markedly differ from those found in stock markets. The average single-transaction price impact is almost completely flat, as large single-transaction price fluctuations are almost exclusively caused by small market orders. This finding is most likely to be caused by some institutional features of the EUR/HUF market.
