About CUB Innovation Centre Public Benefit Ltd.
The CUB Innovation Centre Public Benefit Ltd is a public benefit organisation solely owned by the Corvinus University of Budapest, founded in 2006. The primary goal of the Innovation Centre is to operate an intellectual centre on the knowledge-basis of the Corvinus University which facilitates the broadening of research activities of the University and the financial utilization of the intellectual products by the concentration of research sources and by finding new business partners. In 2010 the Innovation Centre decided to strengthen the already existing relations with Nigeria.
Nigeria has a population of 150 million – the largest in Africa – and a fast-growing economy. Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy, contributing about 45 per cent of GDP. The agriculture sector employs about two-thirds of the country’s total labour force and provides a livelihood for about 90 per cent of the rural population. Yet it is a food-deficit nation and poverty is widespread in the country and has increased since the late 1990s.
Poverty is especially severe in rural areas, where up to 80 per cent of the population live below the poverty line and social services and infrastructure are limited. The country’s poor rural women and men depend on agriculture for food and income. About 90 per cent of Nigeria’s food is produced by small-scale farmers who cultivate small plots (less than 1 hectare) of land.
Relationship Between the CUB and Nigeria
The Corvinus University of Budapest has long had relations with Nigeria. Hundreds of students from several African countries have attended our courses in the last 30 years. We aim to contribute to rural development by training experts who will be able to act as mentors of their own community. By teaching them management skills we foster their involvement in local food production, processing and wholesale.
Our Nigerian partner, the International Trading, Technical and Commercial Consultants Ltd (I.T.C.C.) is a joint venture owned by Nigerians and I.T.C.C. of Hungary. It was incorporated on 21st January 1988 and ever since it has been a serious contributor to the progress of rural areas throughout Nigeria. They provide advisory services in science, technical and educational projects including installation of laboratories and equipment.
What is the Preparatory Program?
The preparatory program is a 4 month long program in Mathematics, English, Chemistry and Biology; and it is offered for students who plan to study in one of the programs offered by Corvinus University of Budapest, but wish to update their knowledge of the above subjects before starting their bachelor studies. The preparatory program is organized by ITCC Technical Ltd. and CUB Innovation Centre, and is taught by professors of Corvinus University of Budapest in Abuja. Those who complete the preparatory program may perform an entrance exam in the framework of the preparatory course. The preparatory year program requires regular attendance by the students for all classes as the results obtained at the tests and exams written in the course of the year will determine whether a student can gain direct admission to the CUB/FBA’s Bachelor programs taught in English. The Certificates are issued by the Corvinus University of Budapest.
At present degrees are awarded at the levels of Food Technology Engineer (BSc) and Food Engineer (MSc). The program of Food Technology aims to train students to become experts who have multifunctional technical knowledge and practice of production, thereby enabling them to start new private enterprises and to solve production and management tasks. The objective of the program of Food Engineering is to teach the scientific principles and practice of food processing. The students learn biotechnology, preservation, packaging, food quality assurance, nutrition and environmental engineering systems. Furthermore, they are required to know and have real practice in planning and management. Therefore, we provide training at the university’s farms where students can gain practical knowledge and expertise.
