CEEPUS Network

CII-CZ-0311 Landscape management - Sustainable land use perspectives in the Central European Region

The network is based on the earlier networks CEEPUS- I. Network (H-0158) and HU-0023-2007-2008.
The network of HU-0023-2007-2008 was decided to be split into two networks due to the high number of participating partners (16) creating two sub-networks in which the follow-up actions can be more concentrated. The main topic was based on interest of the old partners.
The network was coordinated originally by CUB. In spring 2008 coordination was switched to Mendel University.

Europe's cultural landscape has undergone notable changes in the last few decades.  Due to restructuring of agriculture and radical socio-economic changes in Eastern and Central Europe, landscape changes will continue. There are old cultural landscapes having high qualities, but economic priorities overwrite ecologic necessities. Successive and even devastating landscape changes were recorded, which have left barely any relics today. There is very often a complex pressure on cultural landscapes threatening landscape qualities.  Modern agricultural practices, urbanization and recreation all threaten the existence of valuable cultural landscapes. We are facing the question: how can old cultural landscapes have a sustainable future, based on sound economic background and how can the commitment of all actors be achieved?

On the other hand the quality of the landscape has influence on people living there. We have to take into consideration environmental psychological aspects. There are regions in Central and Eastern Europe where tension exists among people/nations. The partners in our network try to ease these tensions by joint efforts.

We recognized the need for interdisciplinary approach in landscape management. Therefore our aim was to establish a network with partners representing landscape architecture, spatial planning, forestry, agronomy, horticulture, environmental science (mainly in soil, water and air systems), horticulture, ecology and biology.
