PHD IN SOCIOLOGY
AT THE CORVINUS UNIVERSITY OF BUDAPEST
DEGREE: PhD in Sociology
The PhD programme in sociology aims to prepare students to carry out high quality research in economic sociology and related social areas. In order to achieve this goal we offer courses in sociological theory, methodology, stratification, economic sociology, and subject area topics. PhD students are supposed to take part in research seminars from the beginning, where their topic is discussed and developed.
THE PROGRAMME INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING SPECIALIZATION AREAS:
Economic sociology, Migration studies, Financial culture of everyday life, Corruption and social norms, Unemployment, Subjective well-being, Information technology and society, Local society research, Social aspects of European integration, Elite and entrepreneurship studies, Corporate social responsibility, Deliberative and experimental methods, Networks, trust and social resources
The work of the PhD student is controlled by a tutor, whose task is to advise the PhD candidate during the research. The degree-acquiring process includes three elements: to pass the doctoral rigorosum, to write and defend the proposal, and to write and defend the final doctoral dissertation. The final dissertation has to be defended in front of a committee, including the opponents with written evaluation of the thesis.
LENGTH OF STUDY PROGRAMME: 6 semesters
LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION: English or Hungarian
o Master level university degree with grade “B” (good) is a minimum requirement for admission
o Good command of English
TUITION FEE AND GRANTS
o Tuition fee per semester: 2000 EUR
o Tuition fee can be reduced by 50 % according to merit and participation in teaching
o Research grant (93.000 HUF/month) may be offered to those who intend to specialize in local society, European integration, corruption, labour market resilience, welfare policy, elite or entrepreneurship studies. Grant eligibility: EU-citizenship, outstanding record and strong research plan
REWARD - 200.000 HUF
Institute of Sociology and Social Policy offers 200.000 HUF reward for PhD students and candidates, who publish article in 2013 in journals recognized by the Social Science Citation Information (see http://www.ssci-thomsonreuters.org/ ). Application is to be sent by e-mail to email@example.com together with a copy of the editorial letter approving the acceptance of the paper, or a copy of the published article.
