The academic year has started at the Corvinus University of Budapest| 2019.09.06.

With the opening meeting of the academic year, the 2019/2020 academic year started at the Corvinus University of Budapest (CUB) on Tuesday.

US Ambassador in Budapest, David B. Cornstein highlighted that the knowledge the students could acquire here was very important and the degree to be obtained by them would open many doors before them which, otherwise, would have stayed closed.

However, he believes that it is not always the things we learn that matter in life but also the people we know. Studies may be essential but, still, it is just as important to build relationships and to get acquainted with people who can mentor us in our progress later, he argued.

The diplomat also advised the students to be courageous enough to always grasp the opportunities offered and not to think ever that it was too late for a change.

President of the Board of Trustees of the Maecenas Universitatis Corvini Foundation, Zsolt Hernádi emphasised that their aim was that students graduating from the University be the best, “the most outstanding economic and social leaders of the region, that is, the elite in the noble sense of the word".

He said that they did not want to create an elite university but rather to have CUB graduates to be the elite. Corvinus is always open before ambitious, talented and excellent students, without regard to origin, he stressed.

He believes that they can build on good foundations since the major part of the actual elite graduated from Corvinus or its predecessor. He underlined that the aim was to enhance the international competitiveness of Corvinus.

Zsolt Hernádi recalled that this would be the first academic year of Corvinus to be a foundation-operated university instead of a state one. The task of the foundation is to ensure conditions necessary for the development of the University, including the best available education, educational staff and the maximum level of competitiveness mentality, he said.

He noted that he would like to have the actual first-year students to become leaders of the biggest international companies and start-ups, or employees of the best research institutes, or most important economic decision-makers, to be present among the key figures of world economy and scientific life.

President of CUB, Anthony Radev said that everyone at the University did everything to ensure the most attractive job offers for the students when they would graduate.

He asked the students to spend all their time and energy on developing their skills, and to start learning enthusiastically since this is the very time for it. He said that it was necessary that the students provide feedback on each study course.

Rector of CUB, András Lánczi said that the notion of the University could not ignore the fact that every university belonged to a community, a country or nation. It is kept alive by their culture and should contribute to satisfying the needs of this community. “Corvinus University believes that it must serve the economic and social welfare of Hungary with the range of studies and community opportunities it offers to the best Hungarian students”, he stressed.

The Rector told that CUB was making a pioneering and extraordinary move in the history of Hungarian tertiary education. Driven by the objective to become one of the best universities in the world, we wish to deliver a new university culture with the provision of more intensive student-teacher relations, in the meantime striving to offer more competitive degrees to top-performing Hungarian and foreign students.

President of the Students’ Self-government, Levente Szabados said that the students of the University were provided outstanding education and experiences here which allowed them to become the very best among their peers in their respective fields of expertise.

Therefore, he encouraged the new students to participate in the work of professional student’s organisations and special colleges as actively as possible and to use opportunities abroad offered by the institution, too.
